NWSL News of Note: Beckie-Turner Trade, Maycee Bell to Courage, KC and Wave Signings

Since the super-sized News of Note was published on Tuesday, there have been two big intra-league trades as well as a pair of notable signings. Topping the trade headlines is another player swap involving Racing Louisville that will see a veteran forward head to the Bluegrass state from Cascadia.

The big news of the day, the unveiling of the new collective bargaining agreement by the NWSL Players Association, will be discussed in a separate article.

Reilyn Turner – Janine Beckie Trade

Racing Louisville were involved in another surprise trade this week, acquiring Canadian forward Janine Beckie from the Portland Thorns, in exchange for their 2024 first round draft pick, forward Reilyn Turner. Additionally, the 30-year-old Beckie signed a contract extension with Racing, through the 2026 NWSL season. (Racing press release, Thorns press release)

During the 2024 regular season, the 21-year-old Turner featured in every match so far for Racing and averaged about 45 minutes per match. Turner had 7 starts out of 16 and scored 4 times, including a late game-tying goal against Seattle Reign and a stoppage time goal against Gotham. (NWSL stats)

Beckie has also appeared in every regular season match for the Thorns this year, starting 10 of those matches and averaging about 57 minutes per match. The Canadian international, who was born and raised in Colorado, has 3 goals this season, but none since April 20th. (NWSL stats)

Maycee Bell from Gotham FC to NC Courage

The first-year defender, whose contract runs through the 2026 season, was traded on Wednesday, in exchange for $80,000 in allocation money plus $10,000 in intra-league transfer funds. The terms of the deal also include “performance-based add-ons” that could increase the intra-league transfer fund amount. (NC Courage press release, Gotham FC press release)

KC Current acquire South African forward Hildah Magaia via loan from Mexican side Mazatlán

Magaia, who scored 2 game-winning goals for South Africa during the last Women’s World Cup, will be on loan to the Current through the end of the season. The terms of the loan include an option for the Current to acquire the 29-year-old Magaia permanently. (August 21st press release)

San Diego Wave sign French outside back Perle Morroni

On Thursday, the Wave announced the signing of the 26-year-old, who has 11 international caps, though none since 2021. Morroni’s contract runs through the 2026 NWSL season. (August 22nd press release) Like the Wave’s other recent French signing, Delphine Cascarino, Morroni last played for Lyon (2021-2024). Before Lyon, Morroni was with PSG from 2014 to 2021.

Ali Riley placed on SEI List by Angel City

The New Zealand international, who is dealing with a nerve issue related to a leg injury was officially moved to the season-ending injury list on Thursday.(August 22nd press release) Riley was a late scratch from the Football Ferns Olympic squad due to the injury (Instagram). From the press release:

“This is something I have been dealing with for quite a long time and it just is not a straightforward injury with a predictable timeline,” said Riley. “I know that if I keep training at this level and pushing myself, I could do more damage than good. I want to get back to the pitch doing what I love pain free and am now taking the time to do that. That doesn’t make this any easier or less frustrating, because all I want to do is play this game with this team for these fans at the highest level possible.
