NWSL News of Note: Hanna Glas to Reign, Sophie Hirst to Thorns, Royals sign defender Julia Grosso

The notables for September 1st and 2nd include a pair of trades and a player signing:

  • Kansas City Current trade defender Hanna Glas to Seattle Reign
  • Houston Dash trade Sophie Hirst to the Portland Thorns
  • Utah Royals sign American defender Julia Grosso

Yes, there is now a second “Julia Grosso” in this league, after the addition of Canadian international midfielder Julia Grosso in August. Utah’s new signing hails from Florida and played at the University of Kentucky for five years.

Kansas City Current trade defender Hanna Glas to Seattle Reign

On Labor Day, both teams announced that Swedish international defender Hanna Glas (SvFF profile) has been acquired by the Reign in exchange for $10,000 in intra-league transfer funds. That fee could double if “certain performance-based incentives are achieved”. (Reign press release, Current press release)

Glas, who signed by the Current in 2023, on a two-year contract, is a free agent for the 2025 season.

The 31-year-old Glas, who missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL injury, has not yet played a regular season NWSL match, though she did start one Summer Cup match this year. (NWSL stats)

Houston Dash trade midfielder Sophie Hirst to the Portland Thorns

In exchange, the Dash received $25,000 in allocation money. The Dash could also receive $10,000 in intra-league transfer funds “if certain performance metrics are achieved”. (Thorns press release, Dash press release).

Hirst played in 7 regular season matches, including 3 starts, this year for the Dash and 2 Summer cup matches. (NWSL stats)

Hirst, who played five years at Harvard (profile), is from the Seattle area and will be a free agent for the 2025 season.

Utah Royals sign American defender Julia Grosso

On Sunday, the Royals announced that they had signed a defender, Julia Grosso (Kentucky profile, Wikipedia bio), who, as noted above, should not be confused with Chicago Red Stars midfielder Julia Grosso. (September 1st press release)

Since graduating from the University of Kentucky, Utah’s Grosso played for Melbourne City in Australia’s A-League for two seasons, making 31 regular season appearances while scoring 2 goals.

Grosso’s contract runs through the end of the 2024 season, so she will be a free agent starting in January.
