On Tuesday, September 3rd, eight teams played their second group stage matches of the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. Among those teams, Brazil and the host, Colombia, secured advancement into the Round of Sixteen. Concacaf sides Canada and Mexico won their matches and now sit on 4 points each. Both are in decent positions to advance to the knockout phase.
Here are the match highlights and goals summaries for the day’s four matches, plus the standings for Group A and Group B, along with some brief discussion of advancement scenarios.
Match Highlights
Mexico 2, Australia 0
Mexico goals: Fatima Severin (57′), Alejandra Lomeli (90’+#)
Australia had a penalty kick (awarded after a successful FVS review), but the shot was hit well over the crossbar.
Mexico’s first goal was a looping deflection of a shot that hit off another Mexican player (Severin), then hit the upper part of the right goalpost and across the line.
Mexico’s second goal was initially called offside, but an automatic Football Video Support review reversed that.

Group Standings
The top two teams from each group advance to the Round of Sixteen, along with the four best third-place teams.
Group A
- Colombia: 6 points, +3 goal difference, 3 goals scored
- Mexico: 4 points, +2 goal difference, 4 goals scored
- Cameroon: 1 point, -1 goal difference, 2 goals scored
- Australia: 0 points, -4 goal difference, no goals scored
Colombia has secured a spot in the Round of 16 as one of the top two teams in Group A. Only Mexico could finish higher in the group.
Mexico, at 4 points, likely has enough points to advance into the Round of 16 as a third-place team, though goal difference could be a deciding factor.
Australia still has a chance to advance, if they defeat Cameroon in their third group match. If that happens, Cameroon will be eliminated and Australia has to hope that its 3 points and goal difference is better than at least two of the other third-place teams.
Cameroon also needs to win its final group match against Australia, though a draw might be enough. With a win, Cameroon would be on 4 points and could advance automatically if Mexico loses to Colombia and Cameroon makes up its goal difference relative to Mexico (e.g., Cameroon wins 2-nil over Australia and Mexico loses by the same scoreline to Colombia).
If Mexico does not lose to Colombia, at best Cameroon could finish third in the group with a win over Australia. If that happens, Cameroon has a decent chance of being one of the best third-place teams.
Group B
- Brazil: 6 points, +12 goal difference, 12 goals scored
- Canada: 4 points, +9 goal difference, 12 goals scored
- France: 1 point, -3 goal difference, 3 goals scored
- Fiji: 0 points, -18 goal difference, no goals scored
Like Colombia, Brazil has secured a spot in the Round of 16 as one of the top two teams in Group B. Only Canada could finish higher in the group.
France is in good shape to advance as a third-place team or better, as they should easily win over Fiji. France will want to run up the scoreline against Fiji so that they can surpass Canada as the second-place team, should Canada lose to Brazil.
Even if Canada loses to Brazil, they are still in a good position to advance as one of the best third-place teams, absent Brazil netting a blow-out win.
Practically speaking, Fiji is all but eliminated.
