After falling to Korea DPR in the semifinals of the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, the United States U-20 Women’s Youth National Team will leave Colombia on a positive note following their extra-time victory over the Netherlands in the third-place match.
The USA had a significant majority of scoring chances during the match, though only managed one goal during regulation: In the 10th minute, Pietra Tordin received a pass and dribbled into the box, but was dispossessed by a Dutch defender. Gisele Thompson picked up the loose ball and found a wide open Ally Sentnor who calmly delivered a one-time shot into the far left side of the goal.
The Netherlands would equalize 16 minutes later and the match remained level until the 119th minute. While the Dutch did have some dangerous chances, including hitting the goalpost in the 87th minute and having a point-blank shot saved by USA goalkeeper Teagan Wy during extra time, the USA dominated the offensive stats with a 26-to-13 shots advantage (9-to-4 on target) and 17 corner kicks to just one for the Netherlands. (edit on 22-Sep-2024: FIFA updated the stats for the match)
The USA’s game-winning goal came in the 119th minute when Maddie Dahlien dribbled into the penalty area and then sent a left-footed cross back to Sentnor, but the ball ricocheted off the shin of a Dutch defender and rolled into the far side of the goal.
The third-place ribbon ceremony was held after the match, but one USA player was absent (x.com post): Florida State forward Jordynn Dudley went down in the 70th minute due to what appears to have been delayed concussion symptoms. Dudley was treated on the pitch for five full minutes. During that time, she was given an oxygen mask and transferred to a stretcher. Dahlien replaced Dudley in the 76th minute as a concussion sub. As of Saturday evening, U.S. Soccer has not given any updates regarding Dudley’s condition.
