U-17 WWC 2024: Match Day 1B — Highlights and Group Standings

On the second day of matches at the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, the most eye-opening result was the nil-nil draw between Japan and debutantes Poland, while the least surprising one was Korea DPR’s 4:1 victory over Mexico. Meanwhile, Brazil and England both earned wins against their African opponents.

As with the opening day, three USA-based players found the back of the net: Mexico’s Citlalli Reyes, Brazil’s Juju Harris, and England’s Lauryn Thompson.

Kenya 0, England 2

England goals: Lola Brown (29′ PK), Lauryn Thompson (87′)

Thompson was an 82nd minute substitute. Her goal came on a broken direct play. An England defender sent a long pass from the top of their box to the halfway line, but the ball was stopped by a Kenya player. Thompson collected the loose ball and dribbled toward goal, launching a hard oddly curling shot a couple yards beyond the “D”. Kenya’s goalkeeper got her gloves on the ball, but that was not enough for a save as the ball kissed the inside of the right goalpost.
