Update (25-Oct-2024): Jane Campbell has been withdrawn due to a “muscle injury during training” and is replaced by Utah Royals goalkeeper Mandy Haught, who has U-20 USWYNT experience. (U.S. Soccer)
On Thursday, U.S. Soccer announced the United States Women’s National Team roster for its upcoming domestic friendlies against #13 Iceland and #33 Argentina. For the three matches, head coach Emma Hayes has called up 26 players, including six who are uncapped at the senior international level.
Among the players not called in are Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman, who is rehabilitating a back injury, and Catarina Macario, who was a late scratch from the USWNT’s Olympic roster. The reason given for Macario’s absence is that she is not back to being a regular starter at Chelsea (x.com post quoting Emma Hayes).
The six uncapped players include Olympic alternates Hal Hirshfelt and Emily Sams, defenders Alyssa Malonson and Eva Gaetino, plus forwards Yazmeen Ryan and Emma Sears.
Notable returnees include Kansas City Current outside-back Hailie Mace, who was last in camp with the USWNT back in January 2023, plus two members of the USWNT’s 2023 WWC roster: Angel City forward Alyssa Thompson and North Carolina Courage midfielder Ashley Sanchez.
None of the NWSL players who competed for the USA in the recent FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, where they finish third, were called up for this camp. The official reason is that those players “are being given time to reintegrate with their clubs”.
Of the 26 players called in, all but four currently ply their trade in the NWSL. Outside-back Emily Fox is with Arsenal in England’s WSL, while three players compete in France’s new Première Ligue: Midfielder Korbin Albert and center-back Eva Gaetino of PSG, plus midfielder Lindsey Horan of Lyon.
In addition to Rodman, three other 2024 Olympic gold medalists have not been called up:
- Midfielder Croix Bethune, who also plays for the Washington Spirit, is recovering from a meniscus injury.
- Center-back Tierna Davidson is recovering from an unspecified minor injury. (x.com) — Update (19-Oct-2024): Davidson has a “hamstring strain” (x.com)
- Outside-back/forward Crystal Dunn “was not available for selection due to personal commitments”. Dunn was last named to an NWSL match roster on September 22nd (NWSL game log).
Per the USWNT’s collective bargaining agreement, this camp is a “Victory Tour” for their Olympic gold medal performance. Under the CBA, U.S. Soccer is obligated to call up all players from the tournament, except for those not “available to participate”.
Match Schedule and TV/Streaming Details
In the United States, all three matches will be televised and streamed live, with both English-language commentary and Spanish-language commentary.

Uncapped Players Mini-Bios
All six uncapped players will be age 28 or younger at the start of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Brazil.
Hal Hershfelt
- Position(s): Midfielder
- Current Age: 23
- Hometown: Hattiesburg, Mississippi
- Current Club: Washington Spirit
- NCAA Team(s): Clemson Tigers (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: n/a
Hershfelt is in her rookie season with the Washington Spirit, after being drafted fifth overall in the 2024 NWSL draft. Hershfelt has started over 20 matches for the Spirit, and averages over 80 minutes per appearance.
Hershfelt played five seasons of collegiate soccer for Clemson, starting 97 of her 99 matches and scoring 16 goals while providing 12 assists. At Clemson, Hershfelt had a “deeper” role (wtop.com) compared to how she is being utilized with the Spirit.
Hershfelt was as an official alternate for the USWNT’s 2024 Olympic team, but was not one of the players named to a gameday roster, so she did not qualify for a medal.
Eva Gaetino
- Position(s): Center-back
- Current Age: 21
- Hometown: Dexter, Michigan
- Current Club: Paris Saint-Germain F.C.
- NCAA Team(s): Notre Dame (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: Two U-23 WYNT camps in 2023
After four seasons at Notre Dame, where she was twice named ACC Defender of the Year, Gaetino signed with PSG in January 2024. During the summer, she extended through the 2025-2026 Première Ligue season (PSG press release).
Gaetino is the youngest American player to scored a goal during the knockout stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. (Wikipedia)
At 5’11”, Gaetino is the tallest field player called up for this camp. Her first USWNT call-up was this year’s SheBelieves Cup.
While at Notre Dame, Gaetino started 75 of her 76 matches. During her senior year, she scored four goals and had three assists.
Gaetino’s younger sister, Bella, is a freshman midfielder/forward for the North Carolina Tarheels (player profile).
Alyssa Malonson
- Position(s): Outside-back
- Current Age: 25
- Hometown: Spring, Texas
- Current Club: Bay FC
- NCAA Team(s): Auburn (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: one U-14 camp in 2013, two U-23 camps
Malonson was originally drafted by the North Carolina Courage in the 2021 NWSL Draft, but chose to play her extra Covid year with Auburn. After five seasons at Auburn, Malonson was acquired by the Seattle Reign in 2022, but was loaned to Denmark’s FC Nordsjælland for one season. Malonson was Bay FC’s first pick in the 2023 expansion draft. After seeing only limited minutes at the beginning of the season, Malonson has started 11 of her last 12 matches, going the full 90 in eight of those matches.
Malonson played five seasons at Auburn, starting all 97 of her matches. From her left outside-back position, she provided 23 assists and netted four goals. For the 2021 season, she was named the SEC Defender of the Year.
Yazmeen Ryan
- Position(s): Midfielder/Forward
- Current Age: 25
- Hometown: Norman, Oklahoma
- Current Club: Gotham FC
- NCAA Team(s): TCU (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: Two U-18 camps in 2018, one U-23 camp in 2019
An attacking midfielder during her collegiate years, Ryan has also been utilized as an outside forward (gothamfc.com interview).
Ryan has already won two NWSL Championships in her young professional career: Her first came in her rookie season with the Portland Thorns in 2022, while her second was last season with her current team, Gotham FC. Ryan was a starter in both of those championship matches.
During her four seasons at TCU, Ryan scored 23 goals and had 23 assists in her 75 matches.
Trivia:
- Ryan was ever-so briefly an Angel City player due to being part of a four-team trade (x.com) in January 2023.
- For each of her three known U.S. Soccer youth camps, she was listed under a different position (midfielder and forward for U-18s, defender for U-23s).
Emily Sams (née Madril)
- Position(s): Center-back
- Current Age: 25
- Hometown: Boise, Idaho
- Current Club: Orlando Pride
- NCAA Team(s): Florida State (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: two U-19 camps, one U-20 camp, three U-23 camps
Sams only played three seasons of collegiate soccer for Florida State, as she suffered two ACL injuries. After winning a national championship in 2021 and being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year that same year, Sams went professional during the summer of 2022, but took an unusual route: She signed a contract directly with the NWSL and then was loaned to a Swedish club, BK Häcken FF (NWSL press release), where she played six matches across all competitions (SvFF player profile). Sams was then selected as the #3 pick in the 2023 NWSL draft by the Orlando Pride.
During her two seasons with Orlando, Sams has started all but one of the 45 matches she has appeared in. The lone exception was the last match before the roster announcement (October 11th, versus Portland), which was the first match after the Pride locked up the 2024 NWSL Shield.
Sams, along with Croix Bethune, was one of two official alternates for the USWNT’s 2024 Olympic team who qualified for a gold medal. However, unlike Bethune, Sams did not play any match minutes during the tournament.
Emma Sears
- Position(s): Forward
- Current Age: 23
- Hometown: Dublin, Ohio
- Current Club: Racing Louisville
- NCAA Team(s): Ohio State (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: n/a
The tallest of forwards called into this camp, Sears is having a standout rookie season, netting five goals and one assist, while being primarily used in a substitute role. In May, Sears and Racing negotiated a new contract that should see her staying in Louisville through the 2026 NWSL season (press release).
At Ohio State, Sears played her first four seasons as an outside forward, but was utilized in a central “playmaker role” during her fifth year (The Lantern). Sears had originally planned on forgoing her extra year of NCAA eligibility, but changed her mind in the August of her final season. Sears scored 25 goals over her 83 matches, while only starting only 66 matches (including just 2 of 17 during her freshman season).
Mandy Haught (née McGlynn)
- Position: Goalkeeper
- Current Age: 25
- Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida
- Current Club: Utah Royals
- NCAA Team(s): Virginia Tech (profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: U-20 USWYNT, including rosters for Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship and the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup; also several U-18 camps, one U-19 camp, and one U-23 camp
A late addition to the camp due to Jane Campbell’s injury, Haught is the only uncapped player with significant USA youth WNT experience. Haught started four of the USA’s five matches at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, including the decisive semifinal against Haiti, which went to penalties after being tied 1:1. In the penalty shootout, Haught saved two kicks, while Haiti missed a third. In the final, the USA fell to Mexico, after a penalty shootout where Haught made one save, but Emily Alvarado made two saves. For the U-20 WWC, head coach Jitka Klimkova preferred Laura Ivory as the sole starter.
After four years at Virginia Tech, Haught was drafted by the future Gotham FC in January 2020, but only made one appearance in two years. For 2022, she signed with Piteå IF and started all 26 matches of the Damallsvenskan season (SvFF player profile).
In 2023, Haught returned to the NWSL and Gotham, who retained her rights, and became Gotham’s preferred starter in the final stretch of the regular season. On Gotham’s road to the 2023 NWSL Championship trophy, Haught started all three of their playoff matches, and was memorably sent off at the end of normal time for a handball outside the area (U.S. Soccer recap).
After the 2023 season Haught was traded to expansion side Utah Royals and has started every match so far, except for the season opener due to serving a red card suspension and a match in late September because of a minor injury picked up in pre-match warm-ups (x.com).
Trivia: Haught played both goalkeeper and forward for her high school team.
Miscellany
Players to be Honored
Three players will be individually honored at two of the friendlies:
- Mallory Swanson — 100th cap ceremony — October 27th (pre-game)
- Kelley O’Hara — retirement — October 27th (halftime)
- Rose Lavelle — 100th cap ceremony — October 30th (pre-game)
Lavelle earned her 100th cap at the June 4th match against the Korea Republic. Swanson’s 100th cap was this summer’s Olympic gold medal match.
“Futures Camp”
The official roster press release confirmed that in January, there will be a secondary camp for “up-and-coming” USWNT prospects that will overlap with a USWNT training camp. Head coach Emma Hayes had discussed such a “futures camp” in at least two of her interviews during NWSL match broadcasts. The following is a direct quote from the press release.
U.S. Soccer is planning to hold a “Futures Camp” alongside the full USWNT training camp in January in Los Angeles that will feature up-and-coming National Team prospects.
Lily Yohannes
Emma Hayes had the following to say when asked about Yohannes (transcript provided by Jonathan Tannenwald – x.com):
I think as I mentioned before, we have to be mindful she’s a really young player and has been, playing her domestic club football in the Netherlands. So understandably, she wants to take the time at her age and her stage before she makes an important decision.
But there has been communication post-Olympics between Lily and us at the [U.S. Soccer] Federation. I’m always optimistic, but I don’t like to pressure anybody in this situation. At the moment, I don’t have an update, but I still very much harbor the hopes that Lily will represent the U.S. in the future.
No matter what time it takes, it needs to be right for Lily, and when that time’s right, I’m sure I’ll update if I have anything to say on that. For the moment, it’s just we haven’t reached a conclusion to that yet.
