October 2024 International Window Guide — Schedule of Notable Matches, plus USA Streaming and TV Details

While the United States Women’s National Team celebrates its gold medal performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics this international window with three friendlies, tops teams in Europe are regrouping and preparing for Women’s Euro 2025. Among them, Olympic bronze medalists Germany, under new head coach Christian Wück, takes on England in a re-match of the 2022 final. Meanwhile, reigning Women’s World Cup champions Spain, who finished fourth at the Olympics, hosts a headless Canada that will be managed “collectively” by an interim staff which includes retired player Diana Matheson.

In the USA, both matches, which will be played on Friday, October 25th, and will stream live. The England-Germany match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT on the free CBS Sports Golazo Network, while Spain-Canada will stream via the paid Paramount+ app at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

Only one top team in Europe is unavailable for friendlies: Sweden, who finished third in their UEFA Nations League group earlier this year, are among 28 teams vying for the final seven spots in next year’s Euros.

Elsewhere in Europe, France is hosting Jamaica and then play the 2025 Euros host, Switzerland, who are led by former USWNT head coach Pia Sundage. Switzerland also plays Australia this window, but are without former Sundhage assistant Tony Gustavsson, whose contract was not renewed following the Matilda’s exit from the Olympics (espn.com).

In the Americas, Concacaf neighbor Mexico is hosting Venezuela and Thailand this window, while Colombia has traveled to Brazil for a pair of friendlies.

Japan, who fell to the USWNT in the Olympic quarterfinals, is hosting Korea Republic and will be lead by 2011 WWC head coach Norio Sasaki, who returns in a caretaker capacity. Those two teams will play twice, though the second match will be closed-door.

Marquee Friendlies

Two friendlies during this window feature teams that are both in the top ten of the FIFA Women’s Rankings. Under FIFA’s ranking procedure (FIFA.com), such matches are worth double compared to regular friendlies.

#2 England vs. #4 Germany

Friday at 2:30 p.m. EDT — CBS Sports Golazo Network (Live)

NWSL Players

  • England (2): Jess Carter (Gotham FC), Anna Moorhouse (Orlando Pride), Esme Morgan (Washington Spirit)
  • Germany (2): Ann-Katrin Berger (Gotham FC), Feli Rauch (North Carolina Courage)

New head coach Christian Wück will be entering the proverbial lion[ness]’s den on Friday when Germany returns to Wembley for the first time since their 2022 Women’s Euro final loss to Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses in the very same venue.(DFB Datencenter: England-Germany history)

Germany is without center-back Bibiane Schulze Solano due to an ACL injury suffered in September (Bilbao news item). Schulze Solano was used twice as a substitute during the 2024 Olympics and started Germany’s group match against Zambia (DFB.de player profile). Also absent is midfielder Lena Oberdorf, who suffered a torn ACL injury just before the Summer Olympics (Bayern news item).

Meanwhile, veteran midfielders Sara Däbritz (104 caps, 17 goals), and Linda Dallman (59 caps, 12 goals) return after missing the Olympics due to injuries.

At least two German players had to withdraw: Goalkeeper Maria “Mala” Grohs, due to requiring tonsils surgery (Bayern press item), and Lea Schüller, because of “persistent knee problems” (Bayern press item).

For the Lionesses, they will be without defender Lotte Wubben-Moy, due to concussion protocol, and Fran Kirby, who was not cleared for Friday’s match. Both are still in England’s camp. (EnglandFootball.com) Forward Lauren James was withdrawn before the camp due to a calf issue that may keep her out for several weeks (x.com).

Also during this window, England hosts South Africa, while Germany will return home to Duisberg for a match against Australia, which will also serve as an international retirement celebration for three Wolfsburg players: Alexandra Popp, Marina Hegering, and Merle Frohms (DFB press release). Germany and Australia last played each other during the group stage at the Olympics, which was a 3-nil victory for Germany.

Suggested Readings

#3 Spain vs. #6 Canada

Friday at 4:00 p.m. EDT — Paramount+ (Live)

NWSL Players

  • Spain (1): Ana Tejada (Utah Royals)
  • Canada (7+1): Janine Beckie (Racing Louisville), Gabby Carle (Washington Spirit), Jessie Fleming (Portland Thorns), Julia Grosso (Chicago Red Stars), Jordyn Huitema (Seattle Reign), Nichelle Prince (Kansas City Current), Kailen Sheridan (San Diego Wave) — Choé Lacasse (Utah Royals) was withdrawn due to injury

After the suspension of Bev Priestman due to DroneGate scandal, the question still remains, who will be in charge of the Canada Women’s National Team. For this window, there is no firm answer. According to Canada Soccer’s roster release, an interim coaching staff “will support the team on a collective basis” during this window:

An interim coaching staff has been formed for the October window. Returning coaches Andy SpenceJen Herst, and Neil Wood will be joined by additional personnel who will provide support for the team specifically during their preparation camp and match against Spain.

Katelyn Collar, head coach of Whitecap FC Girls Elite, joins the staff as an interim technical assistant; Maryse Bard-Martel joins the staff as an interim performance analyst; and Diana Matheson, a former CANWNT legend and Northern Super League founder, joins the staff in an interim team support role, providing leadership and serving as a resource for both staff and players.

This interim coaching staff will support the team on a collective basis for the October window.

Unavailable due to injury are Sydney Collins (ankle; North Carolina Courage), Quinn (Seattle Reign), and Jayde Riviere (Manchester United). Cloé Lacasse was a late scratch due to an unspecified knee injury suffered in the last Utah Royals match before the international break (CBC). Lacasse was replaced by Marie-Yasmine Alidou.

Back in the fold is 20-year-old midfielder/forward Olivia Smith, who signed with Liverpool over the summer. Smith took a knock to her back in a WSL match one week before the international break (LFC news item), but played the full 90 in Liverpool’s last match ahead of the window (LFC recap).

Spain will be without three key players from their Olympic squad, who all play for Barcelona: Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, the current Ballon d’Or winner, plus defender Irene Paredes and striker Salma Paralluelo.

The official reason for Bonmatí’s absence is for injury prevention reasons. The following is a translation of a press conference quote by Spain head coach Montse Tomé (espn.com):

“We have spoken with Barcelona and with Aitana and we believe what she needs is to rest.”

The omission of Paredes is apparently for “sporting” reasons (espn.com).

Paralluelo is unavailable due to an issue involving “muscular imbalances” in her left knee related to a 2021 ACL tear (Barça Femení fan account x.com post).

On Tuesday, Spain will play #14 Italy in Vicenza, Italy, which is about 30 miles west of Venice. Canada has no other friendlies scheduled for this window.

Euro 2025 Qualifying

Except for host Switzerland and the eight teams that have already qualified, most of UEFA will be playing the first of two home-and-away rounds, which will determine what teams claim the remaining seven slots in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Among the five UEFA teams in the top ten of the FIFA women’s rankings, only #5 Sweden has yet to secure a slot in the final tournament. This window, Sweden plays #116 Luxembourg in a pair of home-and-away matches on Friday (1:30 p.m. EDT) and Tuesday (2:00 p.m. EDT).

Sweden has called up one NWSL player this window: Hanna Lundkvist (San Diego Wave). (The NWSL press release also lists Evelina Duljan, who was called up for Sweden’s U-23 WNT.)

While the Sweden-Luxembourg pairing is the most unbalanced (ranking difference of 111 spots), the lowest ranked team still in the hunt is Georgia at #118, who play #24 Republic of Ireland. The two most evenly matched pairings are #32 Poland versus #44 Romania (the winner of which will almost certainly play Sweden in the second round) and #45 Northern Ireland versus #57 Croatia. Both of those pairings have teams separated by only 12 spots. Meanwhile, the pairing with the highest combined rankings is #17 Austria versus #40 Slovenia.

The draw for the play-offs was held in July and determined both the first-round match-ups as well as the pairings for the second-round (UEFA.com).

This UEFA.com page has links to the official match pages (line-ups, timeline, stats) for all qualifying matches this window.

Teams already qualified: Switzerland (host), Denmark, England, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain
