The “Triple Espresso” trio of Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Trinity Rodman will not be playing Wembley in 2024 as all three players have been left off the United States Women’s National Team roster for its final friendlies of the year due to injury issues and/or match load issues. In their place, head coach Emma Hayes has retained first-timers Yazmeen Ryan and Emma Sears from the October roster and has called up Utah Royals forward Ally Sentnor into her first senior USWNT camp. One other player has been given her first call-up this window: Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who is currently the starting goalkeeper for Manchester United in the Women’s Super League. Meanwhile, midfielder Lily Yohannes, who recently committed to the United States, returns for her first camp since June. Also, center-back Tierna Davidson returns after missing the October friendlies due to a minor hamstring strain.
Along with Smith and Swanson, four other players from the 27 players called up for the October friendlies were not named to this 24-player roster: Goalkeeper Jane Campbell, who suffered a muscle injury while training with the USWNT in October; midfielder Olivia Moultrie, who has an ankle or leg issue (Bluesky); defender Hailie Mace; and midfielder Ashley Sanchez.
Over a third of the USWNT’s roster for this camp features players with two or less senior caps: In addition to the two uncapped players, Sentnor and Tullis-Joyce, eight players have either one or two caps, including all seven of the previously uncapped players that were called up for the October friendlies plus the returning Yohannes.
Regarding the “Triple Espresso” trio of Swanson, Smith, and Rodman, at least two of their absences appear to primarily cautionary for either injury and/or load management concerns:
- Trinity Rodman suffered “an intense back spasm” in a September 20th match against the Kansas City Current when she was challenged by Temwa Chawinga (AP). Rodman subsequently missed two NWSL matches and was only used as a substitute for two matches after that, but has started the Spirit’s last three matches, including going the full 120 in both playoff matches (NWSL game log). Rodman was left off of the roster for the October friendlies in order to help her recuperate. Rodman is expected to start in the NWSL Championship final for the Spirit.
- Mallory Swanson suffered minor shoulder injuries in September (Taylor Vincent x.com post), but did not miss any NWSL matches (NWSL game log, which excludes the October 4th match for some reason) and was called up for the October friendlies.
- Sophia Smith left Portland’s quarterfinal loss against Gotham due to a re-injury of her right ankle. Previously, Smith suffered an ankle injury in September against the San Diego Wave during a Concacaf W Champions Cup match. Smith was called up for the October friendlies, but only saw limited minutes.

Mini-Bios for Uncapped Players
Ally Sentnor
- Position(s): Forward, Midfielder
- Current Age: 20
- Hometown: Hanson, Massachusetts
- Current Club: Utah Royals (game log)
- NCAA Team UNC (player profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: 2024 U-20 WWC (Bronze Ball), 2022 U-20 WWC, over 25 camps since U-14 level in 2016
For Ally Sentnor, it has been more of a question of when, not if, she would be called into the senior USWNT. Currently the third-most famous soccer player to hail from Hanson, Massachusetts (after the Mewis sisters), Sentnor has been an almost automatic call-up to USA youth national teams. Most recently she captained the U-20 USWYNT to a third-place finish at the 2024 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she was given the Bronze Ball as the third-best player at the tournament.
In 2019, Sentnor was named the Sports Illustrated Kids “SportsKid of the Year” (CBSNews.com). Sentnor attended UNC for three years, but missed her freshman season due to an injury during an exhibition match.
Ahead of the 2024 NWSL season, Sentnor entered the college draft and was the overall top selection by the reconstituted Utah Royals. During her NWSL rookie season, Sentnor started all 21 matches for which was available, scoring three goals (with her first being a game-winner against the North Carolina Courage) and registering four assists.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce
- Position: Goalkeeper
- Current Age: 28
- Hometown: Shoreham, New York
- Current Club: Manchester United
- NCAA Team: Miami Hurricanes (player profile)
- Youth WNT Experience: One U-23 USWYNT camp in 2018 (x.com)
At 6’0″, Tullis-Joyce is one of the taller goalkeeping options for the USA, but not the tallest. Ahead of her is the 6’1″ Casey Murphy, who shares a 1996 birth year with Tullis-Joyce, but already has 20 USWNT caps.
After playing collegiately for the University of Miami (Florida), Tullis-Joyce went undrafted in the 2019 NWSL draft and signed with Reims, helping them win promotion to France’s first division in her rookie season. In 2021, Tullis-Joyce signed with the then OL Reign, where she started as back-up to long-time France WNT goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi. After Bouhaddi returned to France, Tullis-Joyce was Seattle’s starting goalkeeper during their 2022 Shield-winning season. Then, after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, at her request, she was traded to Manchester United, where she was once again back-up to a national team goalkeeper for part of a season. With the departure of Mary Earps from Manchester United ahead of the current WSL season, Tullis-Joyce is now United’s starting goalkeeper.
Per the U.S. Soccer press release, Tullis-Joyce “trained with the U.S. Under-23 WYNT when she was senior at the University of Miami”. She was a late addition for a camp in May 2018, replacing an injured Ella Dederick (USYNT x.com post).
