“A ros[t]e[r] by any other name…”
(Although U.S. Soccer does not publicly classify the January 2025 Futures Camp as an Under-23 Women’s Youth National Team camp, for all intents and purposes, it is.)
Update #2 (10-Jan-2025): Due to the Los Angeles wildfires, both the USWNT camp and the Futures camp will be moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Those camps will now run from January 17 to 23, which is a day shorter than the originally announced dates of January 14 to 21.
Update (9-Jan-2025): Midfielder Taylor Huff has signed with Bay FC (press release). The text below has been updated accordingly.
The “Futures” roster selected by USWNT head coach Emma Hayes features an intriguing mix of professional and collegiate players with numerous expected names and some unexpected selections as well as some head-scratching non-selections.
None of the players have senior USWNT caps, and only one player, Angel City outside-back Gisele Thompson, has previously trained with the senior USWNT.
Of the 25 players named, 12 played professionally in 2024. All but one of the 12, goalkeeper Neeku Purcell of USL Super League side Brooklyn FC, plied their trade in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Among the 2024 collegiate players, at least six have turned professional for the 2025 NWSL season. Those six include 2024 U-20 USWYNT forwards Maddie Dahlien of UNC and Pietra Tordin of Princeton, who both went pro with a year of NCAA eligibility left.
The Futures Camp is scheduled to take place from January 14th to the 21st at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, which is about 16 miles south of the Los Angeles wildfires. The camp will be concurrent with a USWNT camp that will feature seven uncapped players. All current USWYNT head coaches will be helping to run this camp, along with USWNT head coach Emma Hayes and her staff.
Among the NWSL players selected are some expected names such as the already-mentioned Gisele Thompson, but also Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton and Bay FC defender Savy King. There are also some less expected call-ups: Chicago Red Stars forward Jameese Joseph and Houston Dash forward Avery Patterson. As a rookie in 2024, Patterson led the Dash in minutes (2073) and appearances (28) across all competitions, but only registered three goal contributions (Dash press release). Joseph, who was also a rookie in 2024, scored three goals and tallied two assists in more limited minutes.
Leading the list of current NCAA players is Kate Faasse, who, after a breakout offensive performance for the 2024 NCAA Champion North Carolina Tar Heels, was recently awarded the 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy. Faasse is attending only her second known USWYNT camp. Her previous known camp was at the U-14 level in February 2018.
Other notable NCAA players include Cal goalkeeper Teagan Wy, who is officially listed as a “training player” for this camp, which essentially makes her a back-up to the other three ‘keepers.
One of those goalkeepers is Georgia’s Jordan Brown, who had never been called into any United States youth camp prior to this one.
Another notable collegiate player is midfielder Yuna McCormack. The 5’9″ McCormack recently transferred to Florida State (press release) after two seasons at Virginia. A member of the 2024 U-20 USWYNT that claimed third place in Colombia, she is also eligible to represent Japan (2024 news article).
The youngest player selected is Seattle Reign midfielder Ainsley McCammon, who was born in 2007 and will not turn 21 until after the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Her inclusion is one of the more curious choices, primarily based on her age and lack of NWSL playing time.
Notable non-selections include a pair of 17-year-old midfielders: Angel City’s Kennedy Fuller (NWSL profile), who started 10 of her 19 regular season NWSL matches in 2024, and the 6’2″ Zoe Matthews, who signed with the Houston Dash last October and is also eligible to play for Jamaica.
Just one player, midfielder Lexi Missimo, has played their last regular season of NCAA soccer but has yet to sign with a professional club.

- 2002: 8 players
- 2003: 3 players
- 2004: 8 players (includes training player Teagan Wy)

NWSL Representation: As of January 9th, 11 of 14 clubs have players on the roster of the Futures Camp. The Seattle Reign leads the way with four players, thanks in part to their just-announced signings of forward Maddie Dahlien and defender Emily Mason. Bay FC, the Kansas City Current, and the Portland Thorns are the only other NWSL teams with more than one player at the camp. Those three clubs each have a pair of players.
Youth National Team Experience: As noted above, only one player, Georgia goalkeeper Jordan Brown, had never attended a prior United States youth camp at any age level. Also, as mentioned above, UNC’s Kate Faasse, whose offensive production exploded in 2024, was only called into one camp, which was at the U-14 level in 2018. All other players have attended at least two camps and have played in at least one youth international match.
Makenna Morris, Lexi Missimo, Lily Reale, Reilyn Turner, and Mia Justus have all attended at least 20 U.S. youth camps, with Morris having attended the most (32+ camps).
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and cancellation of the 2020 FIFA youth Women’s World Cups and Concacaf competitions, camp and tournament participation counts are depressed for all players.
FIFA Youth Women’s World Cup Experience: 18 of the 25 players have been named to at least one FIFA U-17 or U-20 WWC. Of those 18, 16 were on the roster for a U-20 WWC in 2022 and/or 2024. Goalkeeper Teagan Wy is the only Futures player who was rostered for both of those tournaments. (2024 U-20 USWYNT captain Ally Sentnor, who was recently capped by the senior USWNT, was also on both tournament rosters.)
