USWNT: According to TNT’s website, the USA will play China on May 31st

Update (3-Mar-2025): U.S. Soccer has confirmed that both the May 31 and June 3 matches will be against China PR. The actual start times for both matches differ from what was listed on TNT’s website.

The name and match time for the United States Women’s National Team’s sixth friendly of 2025 has apparently leaked via the website of the television channel TNT, which is owned by the English-language media rights holder for friendlies involving the USWNT, Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to TNT’s schedule of upcoming U.S. Soccer matches (www.tntdrama.com/ussoccer)1, the USWNT will play the China PR Women’s National Team on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. EDT.

Neither U.S. Soccer nor the Chinese Football Association (website) have publicly announced any matches for the May-June international window. The two Brazil matches were previously announced in December 2024.

Additionally, TNT’s schedule also lists a second match for the May-June international window. That match is apparently scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. EDT. Curiously, the opponent for the second match is listed as “TBD” (to be determined), which suggests that the USA will face China only once in that window and will play a different women’s national team on June 3.

Both matches are listed as being hosted by the USA.

The match against China, on Saturday, May 31, will apparently air on TNT’s sister station, TBS. The second match, on Tuesday, June 3, should air on TNT. Both matches can also be streamed via Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service. However, live sports will be removed from the lowest-priced Max plan, “Basic With Ads” as of March 30, 2025, so fans who are currently subscribed to that plan will either need to upgrade to the “Standard” plan or use a different method to watch the match, such as via NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service, which will stream the matches with Spanish-language coverage. Both matches should also be shown live on NBCUniversal’s Universo channel.

The China PR WNT is currently ranked 17th in the most recent FIFA women’s world ranking (FIFA.com). In February, they played friendlies against Canada, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), and Mexico as part of the Pinatar Cup in Spain. Against sixth-ranked Canada, they played to a 1:1 draw (YouTube highlights), then defeated Chinese Taipei 4-nil (BBC.com), and ended the friendly tournament with an 0:2 loss to Mexico (YouTube highlights), which is currently ranked 31st.

The USWNT and China PR WNT have a long history that dates back to 1986, the second year of the USWNT’s existence. That history most notably includes the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which, after a scoreless 120 minutes, went to a penalty shootout that was won by the USA. In total the USWNT and China PR WNT have played each other in 60 official matches, which is second-most of any USA opponent, behind only Canada, which the USA has played 66 times.

Against China, the USA has a record of 38 wins, 13 draws, and 9 losses. However, only one of those losses occurred after January 2003. For the first 29 matches of the series (July 1986 to January 2003), the USA had a record of 12 wins, 9 draws, and 8 losses. The USA’s record since then (March 2003 to December 2023) has been 26 wins, 4 draws, and just the lone loss, which was in December 2015.2

Most recently, the USWNT and China played each twice in December 2023. Both friendlies were won by the USA: A 3-nil victory in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USSF match report); and a 2:1 come-from-behind win in Frisco, Texas (USSF match report).

Notes

The match dates of May 31 and June 3 are within this year’s May-June international window , which begins on Monday, May 26, and ends on Tuesday, June 3, so the dates do not appear to be made up (e.g., they are not test data).3

I stumbled upon the TNT match schedule while researching my article about the Max streaming service removing live sports from its lowest-cost plan.
