China PR: Recent results

The China PR WNT is currently ranked 17th in the most recent FIFA women’s world ranking (FIFA.com). In February, they played friendlies against Canada, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), and Mexico as part of the Pinatar Cup in Spain. Against sixth-ranked Canada, they played to a 1:1 draw (YouTube highlights), then defeated Chinese Taipei 4-nil (BBC.com), and ended the friendly tournament with an 0:2 loss to Mexico (YouTube highlights), which is currently ranked 31st.

The USWNT’s history versus China PR

The USWNT and China PR WNT have a long history that dates back to 1986, the second year of the USWNT’s existence. That history most notably includes the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, which, after a scoreless 120 minutes, went to a penalty shootout that was won by the USA. The two national teams also faced off in the gold medal match of the first Olympic women’s soccer tournament, which was won by the USA via a 2:1 scoreline.

In total the USWNT and China PR WNT have played each other in 60 official matches, which is second-most of any USA opponent, behind only Canada, which the USA has played 66 times.

Against China, the USA has a record of 38 wins, 13 draws, and 9 losses. However, only one of those losses occurred after January 2003. For the first 29 matches of the series (July 1986 to January 2003), the USA had a record of 12 wins, 9 draws, and 8 losses. The USA’s record since then (March 2003 to December 2023) has been 26 wins, 4 draws, and just the lone loss, which was in December 2015. (USWNT Media Guide)

Most recently, the USWNT and China played each other twice in December 2023. Both friendlies were won by the USA: A 3-nil victory in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USSF match report); and a 2:1 come-from-behind win in Frisco, Texas (USSF match report).
