To qualify for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, the United States Under-19 Women’s Youth National Team will need to either finish first or second in a four-team round-robin group that also includes Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Guyana.
The USA’s qualifying path was confirmed on Wednesday, March 26, when Concacaf held its draw for the 2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, which despite its name, will be an Under-19 event.
The full results of that draw:
- Group A: United States, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Guyana
- Group B: Mexico, Canada, Panama, Nicaragua
For reference, these were the pots for the draw (with Concacaf ranking points in parentheses):
- Pot 1: USA (3683), Mexico (3536)
- Pot 2: Canada (3417), Costa Rica (2261)
- Pot 3: Puerto Rico (1620), Panama (1278)
- Pot 4: Guyana (1221), Nicaragua (953)
In the draw, the USA avoided Canada but was grouped with the host, Costa Rica, which means that the USA will have one less rest day for their semifinal, compared to their opponent in that match.
Unlike the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, which is expanding to 24 teams for the first time this year, the FIFA U-20 WWC was increased to 24 teams starting with its 2024 edition. The four Concacaf teams that qualified for that edition — Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the USA — are, on paper, the favorites to qualify for the 2026 edition.
However, of the two Pot 3 teams, Puerto Rico has a significantly better chance of being a debutante as it avoided being grouped with the much more challenging Pot 2 team, Canada. Puerto Rico’s best finish in a Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship was fourth, in 2022.
Match Schedule for the 2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship
Notes:
- As is normal for Concacaf, each group’s final pair of matches will be played consecutively and not simultaneously.
- This year, no third-place match will be held.
- Should Costa Rica finish as the second-best team in Group A, its semifinal will most likely kick off in the later time slot on Friday, June 6.
TV/Streaming: In the United States, FOX Sports has the English-language television rights for these matches. The USA’s matches will likely air on FOX Sports 2. Depending on scheduling concerns, other matches may either air on FOX Sports 2 or FOX Soccer Plus. Some matches may not be shown by FOX Sports. Any matches shown live on those channels can be streamed live via the FOX Sports app or website (FOXSports.com) with those who have access to the specific channel through their TV service provider (i.e., if one does not have access to FOX Soccer Plus, one will not have access to the live stream).
