U-19 USWYNT: Three NWSL pros called up for the first domestic camp of 2025

With Concacaf qualifying for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup less than two months away, the Under-19 United States Women’s Youth National Team and its Under-18 counterpart, will hold what will probably be their last camps before head coach Carrie Kveton selects her squad for the 2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship.

Unlike the February camp, which only had players who were born in 2006, this camp features three players with 2007 birth years. All three are midfielders who competed in the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup squad and are current NWSL professionals: Melanie Barcenas of the San Diego Wave, Kennedy Fuller of Angel City, and Ainsley McCammon of the Seattle Reign.

Two other current NWSL pros who also competed at the 2024 FIFA U-17 WWC, forward Mary Long and outside-back Katie Scott, both of the Kansas City Current, were named to the concurrent U-18 USWYNT camp, along with five other members of the USA’s squad at the 2024 FIFA U-17 WWC.

Curiously absent from both camps is the only other current NWSL pro who was on the USA’s squad at last year’s FIFA U-17 WWC: San Diego Wave center-back Trinity Armstrong.

None of the five age-eligible players from the USA’s 2024 FIFA U-20 WWC squad were called into this camp. One of those players, Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton is with the senior United States Women’s National Team for the second-straight international window. Three others are training with the U-20 USWYNT in Missouri this week: Stanford goalkeeper Caroline Birkel, Seattle Reign forward Emeri Adames, and Seattle Reign center-back Jordyn Bugg. Of those three, Birkel’s absence from this U-19 camp is the most curious, as she was an unused back-up at the 2024 FIFA U-20 WWC and thus could most use the additional experience of competing in a Concacaf youth tournament. The fifth age-eligible player, Virginia midfielder Addison Halpern, attended the first two U-19 camps this cycle. Like Birkel, Halpern was an unused substitute at the 2024 FIFA U-20 WWC.

This week’s U-20 camp features another goalkeeper with a 2006 birth year, Sonoma Kasica, who is also a curious absence from this U-19 camp.

Just eight return from the 20-player roster that traveled to Spain in February. Only one of those players, defender/midfielder Abby Mills of Notre Dame also attended the first camp of this cycle, back in October 2024.

In addition to Mills, the other seven players returning from the February camp are Arkansas goalkeeper Keegan Smith; North Carolina defender Aven Alvarez; midfielders Ines Derrien of Southern California and Grace Restovich of Notre Dame; plus fowards Kara Croone of UCLA, Izzy Engle of Notre Dame, and Amalia Villareal of Texas.

Two other players return from the October 2024 camp: Texas goalkeeper Mateya Dessieux and Clemson defender Carla Small. Seven additional players from that camp, who all have 2007 birth years, are attending the concurrent U-18 camp.

Meanwhile, four players are apparently attending their first proper U.S. youth national team camp.

This camp, like the concurrent U-18 USWYNT camp, is being held in Fayetteville, Georgia, and runs from Monday, March 31, to Tuesday, April 8.

In addition to the U-18s, three other youth national teams are active the first week of April 2025:
