In the before times, youth national team players who were born a year too late for the next FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup would be included solely in the pool for the Under-23 Women’s (Youth) National Team. However, with U.S. Soccer now using annual school-year cycles for its youth national teams, the potential for an “Over-Age” Under-20 USWYNT team is now possible. That possibility was likely made into reality by Michele Kang’s cash infusion to the women’s and youth’s programs of U.S. Soccer.
So, for the first time since the advent of the FIFA U-20 WWC, there is an Under-20 United States Women’s Youth National Team that is not directly focused on qualifying for or playing in the next FIFA U-20 WWC.
For this camp, which will be lead by San Diego Wave assistant coach Becki Tweed, most of the players selected were born in 2005.
Curiously, the roster also includes four players who have 2006 birth years and are thus eligible for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup: Seattle Reign forward Emeri Adames, goalkeeper Caroline Birkel, who is now enrolled at Stanford, Seattle Reign center-back Jordyn Bugg, and Notre Dame goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica. Bugg and Adames have both played in a FIFA U-20 WWC, so this could be an indication that they have been “graduated out”, but that would probably not be in the best interests of either player, especially given the depth at their respective positions. The inclusion of both goalkeepers is more perplexing as neither has FIFA youth WWC playing experience. Birkel was an unused back-up goalkeeper at the 2024 FIFA U-20 WWC and was called up for the last U-19 camp. Meanwhile, Kasica has not been called into a U-19 camp this cycle. Kasica does have competitive international tournament experience, as she was one of the USA’s two goalkeepers at the 2023 Pan American Games, along with Kealey Titmus, who was called into this week’s U-19 USWYNT camp.
Adames and Bugg are the only two NWSL professionals named to this roster. The other 22 players are all currently with collegiate teams.
The camp will be held at the training facility of the Kansas City Current, which is in Riverside, Missouri and is officially named “The University of Kansas Health System Training Center” (2023 press release). The first day of the camp is Monday, March 31, and it runs until Monday, April 7.
Four other U.S. youth national teams are active the first week of April 2025:
- The U-17s are attempting to qualify for the 2025 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
- The U-18s and U-19s are holding concurrent camps in Fayetteville, Georgia, as the U-19s are preparing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-20 WWC.
- The U-23s are training in Carson, California, concurrently with the senior USWNT.

Stanford midfielder Mia Bhuta captained the USA squad at the 2022 FIFA U-17 WWC in India.
