Update (31-Mar-2025): As expected, center-back Tierna Davidson has been withdrawn due to her knee injury. Outside-back Gisele Thompson has been called from the U-23 USWYNT as a replacement. (U.S. Soccer press release) On 5-April-2025, the rest of this post was been updated accordingly.
Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman is back with the United States Women’s National Team for the first time since the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The addition of Rodman is just one of several changes from February’s SheBelieves Cup roster that USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has made for the squad that will face Brazil twice in early April. Defenders Jenna Nighswonger and Gisele Thompson; along with forwards Lynn Biyendolo, who has a minor lower leg injury, and Emma Sears have not been called up.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, defender Alana Cook, and forward Ashley Hatch also return to the official USWNT fold. Hatch most recently attended the January 2025 USWNT camp. Both Hatch and Cook have not appeared in a USWNT match since 2023.
The Houston Dash’s Avery Patterson is receiving her first call-up to the USWNT. Patterson attended the January 2025 U-23 USWYNT “Futures Camp”, where she was listed as a forward. Here, the versatile flank player is listed as a defender, so she will likely be trialed as an outside-back, a position she has played for the Dash, as well as her former NCAA team, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
In addition to Patterson, the only other uncapped player is goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who was a training player during February’s SheBelieves Cup and was previously called up for the USWNT’s final two matches of 2024.
Three players who earned their first USWNT cap during this year’s SheBelieves Cup have retained their spots in the USWNT roster: Washington Spirit center-back Tara McKeown, Kansas City Current midfielder Claire Hutton, and Kansas City Current forward Michelle Cooper.
The 19-year-old Hutton, along with 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes of AFC Ajax are the only two teenagers on the USWNT’s roster. Seven additional players on the roster are also under age 23.
Head coach Emma Hayes has also named two training players for the camp: Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and Chelsea FC forward Mia Fishel. Anderson previously attended the January 2025 USWNT camp, while Fishel is returning to her first USWNT camp in over a year after suffering an ACL injury during the 2024 SheBelieves Cup.
In addition to Biyendolo, other players not available due to injuries include center-back Naomi Girma (AP article), midfielder Rose Lavelle, who had ankle surgery during the off-season, attacking midfielder Croix Bethune (minor hip injury), and defensive midfielder Hal Hirshfelt (minor ankle injury).
Additionally, two-thirds of “Triple Espresso” remain unavailable: Portland Thorns forward Sophia Wilson is on maternity leave, and Chicago Stars forward Mallory Swanson is still on personal leave.
While Angel City FC outside-back Gisele Thompson was originally not called into this senior USWNT camp, she was named to the concurrent Under-23 Women’s Youth National Team camp that is being held in Carson, California, at the same facility that the USWNT will be using. Update: On Monday, March 31, Gisele Thompson was called up from the U-23s for Tierna Davidson (U.S. Soccer press release). On Wednesday, April 2, Gotham FC confirmed that Davidson has suffered an ACL rupture and is out for the rest of the 2025 NWSL season (Gotham press release).
Among the other players called into the U-23 camp is Paris Saint-Germain center-back Eva Gaetino, who attended a few USWNT camps in 2024 and has one USWNT appearance.
In addition to the U-23s, four other youth national teams are also active during this international window:
- The U-17s are attempting to qualify for the 2025 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
- The U-18s and U-19s are holding concurrent camps in Fayetteville, Georgia, as the U-19s are preparing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U-20 WWC.
- The U-20s (most of whom were born in 2005 and thus too old for next year’s U-20 WWC) are holding a camp in Kansas City, Missouri.
