U-17 WWC 2024: The USA falls to Korea DPR, will play in the Third-Place Match

The United States Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team did what no other team has done at this year’s FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup: Hold Korea DPR scoreless in the first half. For three-quarters of the semifinal, the USA defense bent but did not break against a Korea DPR that had some threatening moments, but only registered two shots on goal the entire match.

U-17 WWC 2024: Quarterfinals, Day 2 — England reaches the semifinals for the first time, will face Spain

The Young Lionesses of England have advanced to the semifinals of a FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after besting Japan on penalties. This is the third time in a row that Japan has exited at the quarterfinal stage of a U-17 WWC, after winning the tournament in 2014 and finishing as runner-up in 2016.

England will face Spain in their semifinal, which will be a rematch of the 2024 UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship final that was won 4-nil by Spain.

In Sunday’s earlier quarterfinal, Ecuador held Spain scoreless for the first third of the match, but then Pau Comendador netted a straight hat trick and Celia Segura added a stoppage time brace to give the European champions a 5-nil victory.

U-17 WWC 2024: Quarterfinals, Day 1 — The USA advances on goals from Fuller and Ascanio; will face Korea DPR in semifinals

For the first time since the inaugural FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in 2008, the USA are back in the semifinals thanks to their 2-nil victory over Nigeria. The USA’s opponent will be Korea DPR who were held to only a lone goal by Poland in Saturday’s other quarterfinal.

U-17 WWC 2024: Match Day 3A — Highlights and Final Group Standings

With all three of its group stage matches in the books, the USA are through to the quarterfinals of the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup following a 5-nil victory over Korea Republic.

In the other Group B match, Colombia took an early lead over Spain when Isabella Diaz collected a loose ball from a Spain player who slipped on a worn section of the pitch, dribbled toward goal and sent a low shot beyond goalkeeper Ziara Vega who could only partially deflect the ball with an outstretched hand. Spain would equalize in the second half from the penalty spot. Then, with about 30 minutes to go in regulation, Diaz slapped a Spain player on her upper chest and was sent off following a video support review. The match remain tied until about 15 seconds before the clock hit 90:00.

In Group A action, Nigeria, who like Spain, were already guaranteed to advance, struggled to score against the host, Dominican Republic. Of Nigeria’s 36 shots, just 3 were on target. Their breakthrough came just before the end of regulation when Shakirat Moshood’s long-range effort sailed beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jaylene Rondon.

Meanwhile, in Ecuador’s 4-nil victory over New Zealand, Caprice Chiuchiolo, who is a verbal commit for Grand Canyon University, notched a brace.

In the quarterfinals, the USA will face Nigeria for the second time in a row. In 2022, the USA fell on penalties to Nigeria, who ended up finishing third. The USA-Nigeria quarterfinal match will be on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Spain will play Ecuador on Sunday. That match will also kick off at 3:30 p.m. EDT

U-17 WWC 2024: Match Day 2A — Highlights and Group Standings Plus Advancement Scenarios

On the third day of group stage matches as the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, the USA defeated Colombia 2-nil via goals from Micayla Johnson and Kennedy Fuller. Two teams, Spain and Nigeria, secured their spots in the quarterfinals round. In Group A, the hosts, Dominican Republic, kept their hopes alive with a salvaged draw against New Zealand.

Spain will be without two players for their third group stage match. In Spain’s 5-nil victory over Korea Republci, forward Alba Cerrato earned a straight red card in the final minutes of the match, after a video support review. Meanwhile, defender Irune Dorado, who was carrying a yellow card from her match against the USA, was given another yellow card just before halftime.

U-17 WWC 2024: Match Day 1A — Highlights and Group Standings

On Wednesday, October 16th, the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup kicked off in the Dominican Republic with four group stage matches.

In Group B, the USA lost 1:3 to the defending champions, Spain, but are in good shape to advance as the other Group B match, between Colombia and Korea Republic, ended in a draw, which eliminated the possibility of three teams each finishing on six points.

The hosts, Dominican Republic, which has 10 USA-based players, opened its campaign with a respectable 0:2 loss to Ecuador.

In all, three USA-based players scored on Wednesday, including two NWSL professionals: Mel Barcenas of the San Diego Wave for the USA and Casey Phair of Angel City for Korea Republic. The third goal-scorer was Colombia’s Ella Martinez, who is an academy player for USL Super League side Tampa Bay Sun and is a verbal commit for Duke University.

U-17 WWC 2024: Official Squad Lists for All 16 Teams — Plus Superlatives and Known NCAA Verbal Commits for USA-Based Players

Last week, FIFA released the official squad lists for all sixteen teams participating in the 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.

I have converted those lists into a Google Sheets spreadsheets, adding columns for a player’s age and a player’s height in inches. Also, for USA-based players that are not currently a professional or not already playing collegiately, their announced verbal commits have been added.

At least five non-USA players have attended U.S. Soccer youth camps. Among those is England’s Lauryn Thompson, who is a Florida State verbal commit.

Three players from the recently concluded U-20 WWC have been named to their country’s rosters for this tournament. Most notably, Choe Il Son, who won the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot in Colombia, is set to play for Korea DPR in this tournament.

On Wednesday, October 16th, the 2024 edition of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup kicks off in the Dominican Republic. Viewers in the United States will be able to watch two of the USA’s group matches live on FOX Sports 2. Also, all of the tournament’s matches will be streamed live with Spanish-language commentary through the NBC Sports app and NBC.com.

U-17 WYNT: Roster Announced for 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup

For the first time, the United States Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team will have currently enrolled NCAA players when it takes the field at this month’s FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. That fact alone would make the roster announced by U.S. Soccer on Tuesday (ussoccer.com) groundbreaking. However, more remarkably, the roster selected by head coach Katie Schoepfer also includes current professionals who play for teams in the National Women’s Soccer League. In addition to the full professionals, the roster also includes players who are associated with USL Super League teams via amateur contracts.

The list of players not included is notable as well. Only one of the five forwards who were on the USA’s qualifying roster earlier this year for the Concacaf U-17 Women’s Championship has been named to the USA’s U-17 WWC roster. The four absent players were responsible for 13 of the USA’s 32 goals scored during that tournament.

U-17 WYNT: A New Cycle Begins Before the Old Cycle Ends — September 2024 Camp Roster

With the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup transitioning to an annual tournament starting in 2025, the next cycle’s United States Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team is holding its first camp this week while the current cycle is in its final stages of preparation for the 2024 U-17 WWC, which begins in mid-October.

Twenty-four players, all with 2008 birth years, have been called into this camp, which runs from Sunday, September 22nd, to Saturday, September 28th, and will be held in Fayetteville, Georgia.

Of the 24 players, 17 are scheduled to graduate high school in 2026, while 6 players are set to graduate in 2027. One player, defender Pearl Cecil, will graduate a year ahead of schedule in 2025 and is a verbal commit for the University of Virginia.

In addition to Cecil, fourteen other players at this camp have known verbal commitments to play NCAA soccer. Four schools have a pair of verbal commits at this camp: Florida State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Stanford.
