USWNT: The USA Defeats Japan 4:1 In Volvo Winners Cup Friendly

In the second match of the Volvo Winners Cup, the United States Women’s National Team defeated Japan 4:1 on braces from Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach.

Morgan opened up the scoring in the 3rd minute after receiving the ball from Tobin Heath, which Morgan smashes into the far corner. In the 10th minute, Megan Rapinoe sends in a tight cross from the left flank to Abby Wambach, who pokes home the eventual game-winner. Japan would get a goal back thanks to poor marking (again) on a corner kick. Fifteen minutes after halftime, Morgan latched onto a weak pass from Aya Miyama and skated her way into the box, where she easily slotted in a grounder to the far post. Then, in stoppage time, Heather O’Reilly sends in a cross to an unmarked Wambach who awkwardly, but effectively heads in the final goal from six yards out.

The USA’s final public friendly will be June 30th in Sandy, Utah, versus Canada. That match will be televised live on NBC at 2:00 pm EDT.
