On Saturday, July 28th, all twelve teams in women’s soccer tournament at this year’s London Olympics will play their second group matches. The United States Women’s National Team, fresh off their comeback win over France will take on Colombia at noon Eastern time. This match will be shown live on NBC Sports Network and NBC’s Specialty Soccer Channel, as well as via a live stream on NBCOlympics.com.
The marquee match for Saturday will be in Japan vs. Sweden which kicks off bright and early at 7:00 a.m. East Coast time. This Group F clash will likely determine the group’s eventual winner. Last month, Japan prevailed 1:0 over Sweden in a friendly.
The USA’s northern neighbor, Canada, faces South Africa at 9:45 a.m. EDT, in a match that will now only be seen in-progress on MSNBC, starting at 10:45 a.m., as fencing has been scheduled during the first half, from 9:30 a.m. EDT to 10:45 a.m. EDT. Fencing was scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., but now there is table tennis in that time-slot.
Both Canada and South Africa are in desperate need of a win in that match, as each lost their opening matches against Japan and Sweden, respectively. If one of those squads can pull out a win, then they will be in good shape for a possible wild card berth as a third-place team.
Another wild card hopeful, New Zealand, will also be looking to get a result out of their match versus Brazil, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. EDT. New Zealand, who lost 0:1 to Great Britain on Wednesday, needs at least a draw to reasonably keeps their hopes alive for a quarterfinal berth.
