The 2020 U-17 USWNT Cycle: Notes On Individual Players (September 2019)

As noted in the previous article on this current U-17 cycle, a core group of seventeen players have been regular call-ups this cycle and during the 2018 U-15 cycle:

Goalkeepers: Nadia Cooper, Neeku Purcell
Defenders: Baleigh Bruster, Andrea Kitahata,  Aidan McConnell, Ayo Oke, and Lilly Reale.
Midfielders: Emma Egizii, Tatiana Fung, Devin Lynch, Alexis Missimo, and Jillian Shimkin
Forwards: Trinity Byars, Simone Jackson, Ariana Manrique,  Allyson Sentnor, and Amelia White

Several from this core group are “players to watch.”  Allyson Sentnor, Alexis Missimo, and Trinity Byars have all garnered significant praise and attention for their on-field prowess.  Forward Amelia White is another standout goalscoring threat who offers speed and composure plus solid fundamentals.  Midfielders Tatiana Fung and Jillian Shimkin both have excellent technical dribbling skills.

These core players are part of a larger pool (identified in the above linked article) of 25 players who have attended at least two U-17 camps so far in 2019.  Among those players are midfielder Devin Lynch and defender Shea O’Malley, who are more recent regular call-ups.  This post is a collection of brief notes on those players, plus a few notable others who may be in the mix.

(I would have liked to mention a defensive player or two, but the lack of useful match videos and the dearth of media attention for these players so far, especially defenders, makes it nigh impossible to mention any more players.)

A quick note about these notes:

Some players have received local media attention in the form of news articles and even local TV news features, while others have not received any notable coverage, even from their own club teams.  So, some entries may have a lot of details, while other players have none, except for stats about call-ups and matches played.

Useful match video, whether extended highlights or full matches,* are rarely available, so proper analysis of each player’s capabilities is not possible.

*This current crop of U-17s did not participate in last year’s U-15 CONCACAF Championship, as the USA decided to send the 2003’ers to that tournament.

However, some useful match highlights and at least one full match (vs. Sweden, September 2019) are available online for this U-17 cycle or the previous U-15 cycle, so normal specific player positions (e.g., outside vs. center back or attacking vs. defensive midfielder) can be discerned for most players with a reasonable amount of certainty.

A number of players have YouTube highlight compilations.  Most of the more useful/representative videos have been embedded in this post.

(If you prefer a summary table with the names of the shortlist players, their general positions, dates of birth, heights, and college choice, please see “Table 1” in the previous article.)

To help put faces to names, here are the team photos from the September 2019 camp in Sweden.  Below each team photo is a list of player names with shirt numbers, in order, from left to right for each row.

Hometown:  West Covina, California
Club Team:  Legends FC
Height:  67 inches
Date of Birth:  April 4, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  California

  • One of the newest players to break into the first-choice tier
  • Only called into one U-15 camp during the 2018 cycle (Netherlands, May 2018), but has since attended one U-16 camp in 2018, plus all three “A”-team U-17 camps in 2019

MACY BLACKBURN – Defender (Outside Back)
Hometown:  Fort Worth , Texas
Club Team:  Solar SC
Height:  67 inches
Date of Birth:  August 7, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Texas Tech

  • Included in this shortlist, as she was a last minute (and unannounced) replacement for Andrea Kitahata on the 2019 Sweden camp roster, which gave her a second call-up after being on the Czech Republic tournament’s “B”-team roster.
  • Prior to 2019, had been called into just one youth camp:  A U-15 camp in March 2018.

BALEIGH BRUSTER – Defender (Center Back)
Hometown:  Smyrna, Georgia
Club Team:  NTH Tophat
Height:  68 inches
Date of Birth:  January 4, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Duke

  • Centerback for both club and country
  • At 5’8″, is one of the tallest field players
  • Trivia:  Even though she has a very early January birthday, she is not the oldest player in the core group

TRINITY BYARS – Forward (Center, Winger)
Hometown:  Richardson, Texas
Club Team:  Solar SC
Height:  65 inches
Date of Birth:  January 29, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Texas

Alexis Missimo also features in a number of Byars’ club highlights.

EMILY COLTON – Midfielder
Hometown:  Carlsbad, California
Club Team:  LA Galaxy San Diego
Height:  63 inches
Date of Birth:  June 23, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  North Carolina

  • Apparently not in the first-choice tier, so best considered as a possible alternate
  • Was one of four players from the “B”-team Czech Republic tournament roster to be called back for the first U-17 domestic training camp of 2019
  • Prior to 2019, had been called into two U-15 camps

NADIA COOPER – Goalkeeper
Hometown:  Katy, Texas
Club Team:  Shattuck-Saint Mary’s
Height:  67 inches
Date of Birth:  January 19, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Washington State

  • Apparently now one of the top-two goalkeepers for the current U-17 cycle, being preferred over Haley Craig, who had been a regular call-up during the 2018 U-15 cycle.
  • Shattuck-Saint Mary’s is a private Episcopalian-affiliated boarding/day school in Minnesota with its own residential soccer program (cf. IMG Academy).  Cooper plays for one of the school’s teams that competes in the Girls Development Academy.

GIOVANA QUEIROZ COSTA – Forward
Hometown:  Weston, Florida (according to U.S. Soccer)
Club Team:  Madrid CFF (B)
Height:  n/a
Date of Birth:  June 21, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  n/a
NCAA Verbal Commit:  n/a

Giovana Costa is a curious case, as she may no longer be in the mix for the US U-17 USWNT as she has recently (September 2019) played for Spain’s U-17 WNT, including a match against the U-17 USWNT, where she scored a hat trick(!) against the USA.

Additionally, there is the question of whether she is eligible to play for the USA or Spain in official youth matches, as she may need approval from FIFA  (Cf. Gedion Zelalem, who did get an exemption: ESPN article #1, ESPN article #2).

  • Has only been called into two USA youth camps, both were U-17 camps in 2019
  • Was on Spain’s roster for the September 2019 preparatory tournament, where she scored a hat trick against the United States (SvFF, USSF) and scored another goal in Spain’s 4-nil rout of the hosts (SvFF)
    • Costa started against the USA, playing almost the full match (89 minutes).
    • Notably, but perhaps not surprisingly, the U.S. Soccer write-up makes no mention of Costa’s history with the U-17 USWNT.
    • Also started Spain’s next match, against Sweden, as their center forward, playing the full 90 (the SvFF has the full match available online, as well as highlights).  She is wearing #9.
  • Madrid CFF shirt name is “Gio”
  • Has played in at least one Primera División match, debuting against FC Barcelona in December 2018
  • A native of Brazil, born in São Paulo (per her old Atletico Madrid academy profile)
  • Has an older brother, Andre “Luque” Luiz Queiroz Costa (BigSoccer thread), who was called into a U-17 USMNT camp (2018 Nike Friendlies)
  • In Florida, her youth club was Weston FC
  • A brief timeline:  Born in 2003, moved to Florida in 2007, then moved to Spain in 2014  (dates pulled and deduced from this uol.com.br article on her brother and other sources)
  • Parents operate (or operated) a small player management company named “Baniva Sports” (baniva.com), among other business endeavors
  • The Eligibility Question:
    • Could be eligible to play for as many as three national teams:  Brazil (by birth), the USA, and Spain.
    • Unfortunately, basic facts such as whether Costa has officially acquired U.S. and/or Spanish citizenship have yet to be publicly and sufficiently confirmed by credible source(s).
    • But, based on her family’s time in Florida, it is very likely that she does already possess U.S. citizenship, most likely through one of the processes allowed by the Child Citizenship Act of 2000 (travel.state.gov FAQ, USCIS.gov Policy Manual – INA 320, INA 322)
    • At least one parent, her mother, appears to have U.S. citizenship
    • In Spain, Costa’s parent(s) could have acquired Spanish citizenship after as little as two years of residence because they hail from an “Ibero-American” country, namely Brazil.  Once a parent has Spanish citizenship, their child could also acquire Spanish citizenship “by option” until she turns 20 years-old (exteriores.gob.es, in English)
    • FIFA’s eligibility rules for national teams are somewhat confusing, especially as there are a number of gray areas regarding youth player eligibility.
    • This does not appear to be the typical dual national by birth (e.g., Sydney Leroux, Sophia Huerta, or Teresa Noyola) situation, so FIFA approval would be required if Costa decided to play for either the United States’ or Spain’s youth teams in an official competition organized by CONCACAF, UEFA, or FIFA.  (Cf. Gedion Zelalem, who did get an exemption: ESPN article #1, ESPN article #2).
  • The Other Eligibility Question:
    • It is also unclear whether Costa plans on continuing playing in Spain or perhaps might be entertaining the idea of returning to the States to play collegiate soccer.
    • As the NCAA has a tight definition of amateurism, if Costa has or does receive excessive compensation beyond “actual and necessary expenses” from her club team, then she would likely be ineligible. (2019 Hartford Courant article about a Polish women’s basketball player who will be playing for UConn)
    • Though, given that Costa primarily plays for Madrid CFF’s “B” team, it is doubtful that Costa is earning significant compensation and far more probable that she is still an amateur under both FIFA’s and the NCAA’s standards (but that would need to thoroughly investigated by any potential NCAA team).
  • Queiroz or Costa or Both?  Her father’s family name is “Costa,” which under Portuguese name conventions is traditionally the second family name, following the mother’s family name. U.S. Soccer’s use of “Costa” as a single surname is permissible, though using both family names is more proper.  Under Spanish conventions, the family names are reversed, which is why articles and RFEF write-ups may identify her as just “Giovana Queiroz,” which is probably incorrect. • sometimes takes corner kicks

Club Team:  Sporting Blue Valley
Height:  63 inches
Date of Birth:  July 8, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Florida State

  • Not a consistent call-up under Tracey Kevins, most notably absent from the Weifang tournament roster in 2018 and the most recent camp (Sweden 2019), so appears to be just outside the top tier of attacking options for the U-17 USWNT
  • Local TV write-up with video feature (June 2019)

SIMONE JACKSON – Forward (Winger)
Hometown:  Redondo Beach, California

  • The oldest player among the core group, having been born on January 1st of the cut-off year for the 2020 U-17 WWC.
  • Was on the original roster for the September 2019 preparatory tournament in Sweden, but was apparently replaced by Macy Blackburn in an unannounced change

KARLIE LEMA – Forward
Hometown:  Morgan Hill, California
Club Team:  MVLA SC
Height:  69 inches
Date of Birth:  June 29, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021

  • Outside of the top-tier in the depth chart for forwards
  • Scored in every match of a three-game U-16 UEFA developmental tournament held in the Czech Republic this year, including a hat trick against Belgium
  • Was called back for the following domestic camp, but did not make the Sweden 2019 roster
  • First called up to the U-15s in July 2018, impressing enough to make the Weifang tournament roster (Trinity Byars and Alexis Missimo were unavailable for that roster as they were in the mix for making the 2018 U-17 WWC roster.)

High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  California (Berkeley)

  • Has been consistently called-up under Tracey Kevins in 2018 and 2019
  • But, has not seen a lot of minutes.  Probably the most likely core forward who could be dropped

AIDAN MCCONNELL – Defender (Center Back)
Hometown:  Dexter, Michigan

  • On the roster for the Weifang tournament in August 2018, playing just 78 minutes over the three 90-minute matches.

Height:  63 inches
Date of Birth:  April 5, 2003

  • Nicknamed “Ayo” which appears to be preferred over her full given name (or at least more commonly used online).  “Ayooluwa” is also sometimes used.
  • A forward with her club team
  • Her specific U-17 USWNT position appears to be right outside back
  • Official highlights of a 2017 DA match when Oke played for Concorde Fire.  (She is #10 and wearing a captain’s armband.)

SHEA O’MALLEY – Defender (Outside Back)
Hometown:  Cary, North Carolina

  • A “once in a generation player”New England Soccer Journal (the four page cover story on Sentnor is a must-read)
  • exceptional technical dribbling skills, very nimble
  • Scored a brace and a hat trick against Germany’s U-15 GNT in back-to-back matches (November 2017)

Club Team:  Sky Blue – NYSC
Height:  62 inches
Date of Birth:  February 21, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Penn State

  • Paul Riley has some high praise for Shimkin (PaulRileySoccer.com):
    • “I think she’s at the level of all of them,” he said. “She’s super talented. She’s a soccer brainiac. She has small frame, probably a Debinha-type frame, but so good on the ball.”
    • “Great acceleration, great balance. She’s a mini-Messi almost,” he added.
    • “Lovely left foot, good right foot, two good feet, can do anything with the ball,” Riley continued. “Loves to beat players, loves to create, loves to score. She has a lot of great tools and her work ethic is phenomenal both in practice and in games.
  • commonly takes corner kicks
  • Scored an olympico against China’s U-15 GNT at last year’s Weifang Tournament (highlights video below)
  • Also scored via direct free kick on the last play of a friendly match against the Netherlands U-15, salvaging a 2:2 draw for the Americans (USSoccer.com)
  • Played for the FC Fury NY for two Development Academy seasons, before moving to Sky Blue – NYSC for the current season (DA profile)
  • Her younger sister, Chloe, has played on U.S. Youth Futsal Teams (Newsday).  Chloe, a 2006’er, also plays club soccer (Chloe’s DA profile).

AMELIA WHITE – Forward (Winger, Center)
Hometown:  Fort Wayne, Indiana
Club Team:  Fort Wayne United FC
Height:  64 inches
Date of Birth:  June 17, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2022
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Penn State

The following players are not considered current “shortlist” players, as they have only been called into one or no U-17 camps so far in 2019, but are noteworthy, as explained in their write-ups:

HALEY CRAIG – Goalkeeper
Hometown:  Dexter, Michigan
Club Team:  Michigan Jaguars FC
Height:  69 inches
Date of Birth:  February 7, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Stanford

  • A back-up goalkeeper candidate, especially if the USA qualify for the 2020 U-17 WWC
  • A regular call-in during the 2017-2018 U-15 cycle, but was not on the last two rosters (July NTC camp, Weifang tournament) in August. Craig was apparently leapfrogged by Nadia Cooper on Tracey Kevins’ goalkeeper depth chart.
  • One U-17 WNT call-up in 2019:  The “B”-team roster for the UEFA developmental tournament in the Czech Republic.
  • Previously played for the Michigan Hawks prior to the 2019-2020 Development Academy season

ELISE EVANS – Defender (Center Back)
Hometown: Redwood City, California
Club Team: San Jose Earthquakes Acad.
Height: 67 inches
Date of Birth: December 16, 2004
High School Graduation Year: 2022
NCAA Verbal Commit: Stanford

  • Called up once in 2019 to the U-17s as a late replacement for Lilly Reale, who was on the original “A”-team roster for the UEFA U-16 developmental tournament in Portugal (May 2019)
  • A “young” 2004’er, having been born in the middle of December, making her over 20 months younger than some of the oldest core players
  • Started both U-16 matches against the Netherlands in 2019
  • A consistent call-up for the 2018 U-14 GNT, including the CONCACAF U-15 Girls Championship. One notable stat: She had the fewest minutes played of any USA defender during that tournament.
  • Can track down attackers with her long strides, has a strong right leg for passing
  • Good defensive instincts
  • Ball control while dribbling and first touch control seems to be lacking, though she does have some technical moves
  • Has also played as an attacker on her club teams

KAYLA COLBERT – Defender (Outside Back)
Hometown:  Rancho Cucamonga, California
Club Team:  Legends FC
Height:  62 inches
Date of Birth:  January 11, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  USC

  • As noted in my U-17 cycle review, Colbert is another curious case, having attended at least twelve USA youth camps, but only two early U-15 camps during the 2018 cycle and none of the U-17 camps in 2019.  Not even the more-or-less “B”-team roster for the Czech Republic developmental tournament.
  • Colbert attended all four U-14 camps in 2016 and was apparently rated very highly by U.S. Soccer, as she was the only 2003-born player called into a special goalkeepers and attackers camp in December 2016.  The 29 other attendees were all 2000 to 2002 birth years.
  • In 2017, attended three U-16 camps, and in 2018, attended another two U-16 camps
  • Listed on camp rosters primarily as a defender, a few times as a forward
  • On the same club team roster as U-17 core players Courtney Boone and Tatiana Fung: Legends FC U-18/19
  • Appears to be healthy, as she has already played in two Development Academy matches for the 2019-2020 season and played 30 games in total last season (DA profile).

KELLIE PAGADOR – Defender (Outside Back)
Hometown:  Roseville, California
Club Team:  Placer United SC
Height:  67 inches
Date of Birth:  April 9, 2003
High School Graduation Year:  2021
NCAA Verbal Commit:  Stanford

  • A regular call-up during the 2018 U-15 cycle, Pagador has yet to be called into any youth camps in 2019
  • During 2018, she was also called into a U-17 camp and a U-16 camp
  • Was on the Weifang tournament roster in August 2018, starting against Japan and China, plus played 45 minutes as a sub in the other match against the Czech Republic
  • Younger sister of Sydney Pagador, who played for the Philippines WNT as a 13-year-old, but apparently did not play college soccer, though she did sign a national letter of intent to play for the University of New Mexico, where their father played college football (official announcement – UNM Athletics)
