Official Announcement on New Women’s Professional Soccer League Scheduled For Wednesday

Multiple professional soccer journalists have confirmed via Twitter (e.g. Grant Wahl, Jack Bell, Jeffrey Carlisle, Jeff Kassouf) that a conference call on a new women’s professional soccer league has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 21st. The call is apparently scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET (per @liviubird). Representatives from U.S. Soccer, Canada Soccer (CSA), and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) will all be on the call. The nature of Canada’s and Mexico’s federations involvement in this new league remains unclear.

New Details Emerge Regarding the Proposed New League

According to an article by Charles Boehm of SoccerWire.com, U.S. Soccer has recently set out an email to members of the United States Women’s National Team regarding a possible new professional women’s league that will begin play in 2013.  The email mentions eight potential teams, including four former WPS squads — Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash, and New Jersey’s Sky Blue FC — plus franchises in Washington, D.C.; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and the Kansas City area. Regarding when the new proposed league will officially announced, no specific date has been given, although it is expected to be no later than the end of November or early December.

Germany’s Travel Roster for the October Friendlies with the USWNT

Update (18-Oct-2012): On Wednesday, Celia Okoyino da Mbabi injured her thigh and will be out for two weeks, thus she will miss both of the friendlies with the USWNT. Also, Lena Lotzen and Verena Faißt are also nursing minor injuries, but should be available to play. (DFB.de, in German)

On Monday, the DFB published the the travel roster for Germany’s upcoming friendlies with the United States Women’s National Team, on October 20th (Bridgeview, Illinois) and October 23rd (Connecticut). Head coach Silvia Neid has called up 23 players, including offensive threats Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, Alexandra Popp, and Anja Mittag. Five players from Germany’s Under-20 WNT, which recently lost the U-20 Women’s World Cup final to the United States, were also called up: playmaking midfielder Dzenifer Marozsán, target forward Lena Lotzen, centerback Luisa Wensing, outside back Leonie Maier, and goalkeeper Laura Benkarth. Updates on a Possible New League and The Search for the Next USWNT Head Coach

On Friday, Sunil Gulati held a conference call where he provided updates on the search for the next head coach of the United States Women’s National Team and the possibility of a new women’s professional league. A quote sheet is available at USSoccer.com.

Regarding the search, Gulati indicated that the search committee has been quite active in discussing potential candidates and conducting interviews. Also, the soft deadline for a decision is still the end of October. In the mean time, Jill Ellis will be the interim head coach.

As to the new league, Gulati stated that there are eleven candidate owners in ten cities/market and that U.S. Soccer is in the process of vetting those owners. Another Announcement For a New Women’s League: 2012 Edition, Volume 2

On Wednesday, June 27th, a meeting organized by U.S. Soccer was held in Chicago where a possible new (semi)professional women’s league was discussed. Right now, the main source of news is an article posted by Jeff Kassouf at EqualizerSoccer.com. Additionally, there was some elaboration on Twitter by Lisa Cole, who is with the Boston Breakers, summarized in a blog post. They key aspects of this proposal is a coast-to-coast national league, 12 to 16 teams, and more modest team budgets of around $500,000. This is the second league announcement this year, after the USL teased its own new league, which would be called “W-PRO” (www.potomacsoccerwire.com). WPS League Officially Folds

Earlier today (Friday, May 18th), the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league released two press statements announcing that (1) the lawsuit between Dan Borislow and the league had been settled, and (2) that the league was permanently suspending operations and would proceed with a dissolvement of the league (e.g., winding down).
