U-17 USWNT: Recap of Their Trip to Eastern Europe

At the end of July, the Under-17 Women’s National Team traveled to Croatia and Slovenia where they played three club teams and the full women’s national team of Slovenia, going 4-0-0. In the 2:1 win over Slovenia, the U-17s were without the services of three starters: goalkeeper Jane Campbell, star striker Summer Green, and energetic attacking midfielder Sarah Robinson. U-17 USWNT: Travel Roster For Overseas Training Camp

On Monday, U.S. Soccer released the travel roster for the United States Under-17 WNT’s last major training camp prior to the Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan. Only nineteen players were called up, with one additional player to be named at a later date. Eighteen of those players participated in CONCACAF qualifying. The two players from Guatemala not on the roster are midfielder Sarah Robinson and defender Lizzie Raben. The one added player is defender Claire Wagner, who is a teammate of Joanna Boyles and Morgan Reid at CASL’s Chelsea Ladies (Raleigh, NC). During the camp, which runs from July 19th to the 30th and will be held in Croatia and Slovenia, the U-17s will play four tune-up matches, all against older players, with the first three opponents being club teams, while the final will be versus the full women’s national team of Slovenia. Under-17 Women’s World Cup – The Draw: And, The Toughest Group Goes To… The USA

On Friday, July 6th, the draw for the 2012 Under-17 Women’s World Cup was held in Baku, Azerbaijan. For the second time this year, a United States Youth Women’s National Team got a difficult group, with the USA being drawn into Group B, along with North Korea, France, and debutante Gambia. In its only previous trip to the U-17 WWC, the USA was also grouped with France, and went on to face North Korea in the title match, falling to the Asian side via an extra time goal.  The four groups were as follows:

Group A: Azerbaijan, Colombia, Nigeria, Canada
Group B: France, USA, North Korea, Gambia
Group C: Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan

Under-17 Women’s World Cup: How the Teams Qualified and Quick Thoughts Ahead of the Draw

On Friday, July 6th the draw for the Under-17 Women’s World Cup (U-17 WWC) will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, at 10:00 am EDT (19:00 local time). (FIFA.com) Once the draw is complete, the sixteen teams that qualified for the tournament, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will learn their opening round group opponents.

The bulk of this post reviews how the sixteen teams qualified, with scorelines for all official matches, along with the results of international friendlies, which are useful for cross-confederation comparisons. U-20 WWC: USA Opponent Ghana In Midst of Funding Crisis

Recently, both the Under-20 and Under-17 Women’s National Teams of Ghana had to temporarily halt their preparations for their respective World Cups because of a lack of funds, mainly for food, from the Ghana Football Association. This brief suspension of training only lasted about a week, from Friday, June 22nd, to Thursday, June 28th, due to a benefactor stepping forward and agreeing to donate the necessary funds for the two teams’ camps. U-17 USWNT: June Camp Roster – 26 Called In

On Monday, US Soccer released the roster for the U-17 USWNT’s June camp, which runs from June 9th to the 16th. Twenty-six players were called in, including all twenty from CONCACAF qualifying. The only new face is midfielder Jaye Boissiere of the MVLA Lightning ( Los Altos Hills, California). Slot Allocations for the 2015 Women’s World Cup and 2014 Youth WWCs Announced

Today or yesterday, FIFA uploaded a circular (PDF) with the details of the slot allocations per confederation for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, the 2014 Under-17 Women’s World Cup, and the 2014 Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

As the 2015 WWC will be the first with 24 teams, up from 16 teams, that allocation decision was of extra interest. CONCACAF had the biggest relative gain, going from 2.5 slots up to 4.5 slots (including host Canada), which means that the USA should have a lot less trouble qualifying this time around. U-17 WWC 2012: Things To Know

Today, the United States qualified for the 2012 Under-17 Women’s World Cup by defeating Panama 7:0 in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship.  Also, Canada qualified by defeating Mexico 1:0. Panama and Mexico will play for the final spot from CONCACAF on Saturday.

Here are some key things to know about the U-17 WWC.

BASIC DETAILS

(This tournament kicks off two weeks after the U-20 WWC finishes: August 19th to September 8th.)

QUALIFIED TEAMS

Four of the six confederations have completed qualification, with UEFA (Europe) and CONCACAF the only two to not yet have all their spots decided.

  • Host (1): Azerbaijan
  • Africa (3): Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia
  • Asia (3): Japan, North Korea, China
  • North America (3): United States, Canada,…
  • Oceania (1): New Zealand
  • South America (3): Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia

YET TO QUALIFY

Europe. UEFA has two spots (besides the host) and their tournament is down to a four-team knock-out phase, with the winners of the semifinals going to the U-17 WWC. That phase of the tournament will be played in late June, in Switzerland, with the win-or-go-home semifinals on June 26th. The two semifinal match-ups:

  • Switzerland vs. France
  • Denmark vs. Germany

With France and Germany being the favorites in their matches. Tournament Website (UEFA.com)

North America. CONCACAF has one spot left to decide, which will be between Panama and Mexico, in the third-place match of the U-17 Championship, which will be played on Saturday.

FORMAT

The tournament is a traditional sixteen team world cup, with the teams divided into four groups of four, and the top two teams in each group advance to the knock-out stage which consists of quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place match, and a final.

Most of the matches will be held in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, which has four venues that will be used, with Lankaran being the only other host city.

No Extra Time: In the knock-out stage, if the teams are tied after the end of regulation, the match will go straight to a penalty shoot-out. There will not be thirty minutes of added time. This was a change made in 2011 for all U-17 and under FIFA tournaments, including the men’s. The original proposal was put forth by “the Medical Committee and the FIFA Task Force Football 2014” (PDF on the U-17 Men’s World Cup).

Roster Size: 21 players, including three goalkeepers.
