Earlier today (Friday, April 27th), the USA’s final group stage opponent, Mexico, released its final roster for the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship, which begins on May 2nd. Of the 20 players rostered, 11 play for American club teams, including 10 who were born in the United States.
From the previous roster, six player were cut, including five who played for American club teams. The six players cut were Elisa Martin (goalkeeper), Stephanie Alcazar (defender), Maria Solis (defender), Paola Urbieta (defender), Anahie Duran (midfielder), and Micaela Estrada (midfielder).
Three of the players — Taylor Alvarado, Hallie Hernandez, and Vivian Vega — were listed as forwards in the last roster, but now are listed as midfielders, while one player, Cassie Reyes, was listed as midfielder, but is now listed as a forward.
Two of the players, Jenny Chiu and Cynthia Pineda, have been in USWNT youth camps. Chiu, who has verbally committed to UNC, was in the first U-17 WNT camp of 2011, where she was a substitute in a match versus Germany’s U-17 WNT. Pineda is the younger sister of a current U-20 USMNT player, Victor Pineda, who was in that team’s last camp, and is a “Homegrown Player” for MLS’ Chicago Fire.
FMF’s news item about the roster (femexfut.org.mx) also includes the place of the birth for all the players, which was not listed in the previous roster.
Mexico and the USA play each other in the final match of their group on Monday, May 7th, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
