UEFA Women’s Champions League: Lyon, Göteborg, Arsenal, Wolfsburg, and Malmö Make the Quarterfinals

This week, the 2012-2013 UEFA Women’s Champions League wrapped up its Round of 16. The  eight squads remaining are Arsenal Ladies (England) ASD Torres CF (Italy), WFC Rossiyanka (Russia), FCF Juvisy (France), K/Göteborg FC (Sweden), Olympique Lyonnais (France), VfL Wolfsburg (Germany) and LdB Malmö (Sweden).

Notable performances this week include veteran England striker Kelly Smith scoring a hat trick (UEFA.com) as her squad, Arsenal Ladies, knocked off Turbine Potsdam in a dramatic 4:3 second leg (6:4 on aggregate). USWNT pool player Keelin Winters scored a second-half goal in that match for Potsdam. USWNT Olympic alternate Christen Press had a hand in all three goals for Göteborg FC’s 3:2 win over Danish side Fortuna Hjørring, scoring two goals and assisting on the other (UEFA.com). In the earlier leg, which was a 1:1 draw, USWNT player Yael Averbuch scored a crucial away goal and equalizer. Wolfsburg’s Connie Pohlers scored her 39th career UEFA Women’s Champions League goal, tying retired Sweden forward Hannah Ljungberg’s tally (UEFA.com).

The draw for the quarterfinal round will be held on Tuesday, November 27th. The quarterfinals will be played in March 2013, followed by the semifinals in April 2013. The final will be contested on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in London, England (UEFA.com).
