FIFA WWC: The 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup will have 48 teams

On Friday, May 9, FIFA announced that the 2031 Women’s World Cup — which will most likely be hosted by the United States of America, plus other Concacaf nations — will have a field of 48 teams. That is an increase of 50% compared to its present size of 32. The decision was made by the FIFA Council (fifa.com).

The idea of expanding the Women’s World Cup to 32 teams had been discussed seriously by those within the FIFA Council since at least September 2024.

As to what a 48-team Women’s World Cup would look like, see this article from September 2024. That article includes a section on the potential field of teams as well as the potential pots for the draw that would determine the groups.

Northern Super League: Canada’s new league kicks off on Wednesday

Update (16-Apr-2025): All matches will be available in the USA, either via ESPN+ or the NSL’s website (nsl.ca). Also, for those outside the USA and Canada, all matches can be streamed for free via the NSL’s website.

Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Northern Super League, begins play on Wednesday, April 16. Fans in the United States will be able to watch about half of the league’s regular season matches via the ESPN+ streaming service.

For its inaugural season, the league consists of six teams: The Calgary Wild, the Halifax Tides, the Montréal Roses, the Ottawa Rapid, AFC Toronto, and the Vancouver Rise. All six teams have received a “National 1 License” under the Canada Soccer Club Licensing Program (Canada Soccer press release).

During the 2025 regular season, each team will play each other team five times, for a total of 25 matches. As the total number of matches each team will play is odd, three of the teams (Ottawa, Calgary, and Halifax) will have an extra home match. The regular season runs from mid-April to mid-October. Playoffs will also be held: The top four teams will be paired off for two-legged semifinals, followed by a single-match championship. (NSL press release).

Streaming: USWNT and USMNT matches no longer available on the Max “Basic With Ads” plan

As announced in late February, the Max streaming service has removed live sports from its “Basic With Ads” plan.

Thus, in order to watch international soccer friendlies involving the United States Women’s and Men’s National Teams, viewers who have relied on the Max streaming service will either need to upgrade to its “Standard” plan or use NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service, which shows USA friendlies with Spanish-language commentary. For details about pricing and alternatives, see this help guide.

2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship: Draw scheduled for March 26th, Costa Rica will host

The 2025 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, which will determine the confederation’s four representatives for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, will be held from Thursday, May 29, to Sunday, June 8. Costa Rica will be the host, with all matches to be played at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, the home stadium of L. D. Alajuelense.

The draw is scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, at 11:00 a.m. EDT.

The eight teams that will play in the Championship are the United States and Mexico, which both had byes for the preliminary qualifying stage, plus the six group winners from the preliminary round: Canada, Costa Rica, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama, and Puerto Rico.

Notably absent is Jamaica, which, along with the United States and Mexico, had participated in all previous editions of this tournament, including when it was designated as an Under-19 event in 2002 and 2004.

Based on the updated Concacaf Women’s Under-20 ranking, the pots should be as follows (with ranking points in parentheses):

Pot 1: USA (3683), Mexico (3536)
Pot 2: Canada (3417), Costa Rica (2261)
Pot 3: Puerto Rico (1620), Panama (1278)
Pot 4: Guyana (1221), Nicaragua (953)

Streaming: USWNT and USMNT matches will no longer be available on the Max “Basic With Ads” plan as of March 30, 2025

On March 30, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service (www.max.com), will remove all live sports programming from its least expensive plan, “Basic With Ads”. Among the sporting events affected are international soccer friendlies involving the United States Women’s and Men’s National Teams.

Thus, for those in the USA who wish to stream friendly matches featuring the USWNT and/or USMNT, the options will be to either (1) switch to one of the more expensive Max plans or (2) watch the matches via NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service (www.peacocktv.com). One issue with the second option is that NBCUniversal has the Spanish-language rights, so those who prefer to watch the matches with English-language coverage would be best served by upgrading to Max’s “Standard” or “Premium” plans.

(Note: All monthly and annual fees quoted are subject to change and do not include taxes and added fees that may be applicable.)

Viewers who are paid subscribers to Max’s “Basic with Ads” plan and move up to its middle “Standard” tier would need to pay an additional $7.00 per month to watch USWNT matches. Those who have free subscriptions to Max (e.g., through a DashPass membership or a Cricket Wireless Unlimited plan) would need to pay the full price for the “Standard” tier, which is currently $16.99 per month. For those in the latter situation, a Peacock subscription, which starts at only $7.99 per month, will likely be the more cost-effective option.

A 48-Team FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2031?

Update (9-May-2025): The 2031 FIFA WWC will have a field of 48-teams.

On Tuesday, two separate articles were published by British media about a push for FIFA to expand the final tournament of the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup to 48 teams, which would match the size of the next men’s World Cup in 2026 .

Absent a change in format, the expansion to 48 teams would introduce an additional knockout round, the Round of Thirty-Two, extend the length of the tournament by several days, and increase the number of matches from 64 (48 group, 16 knockout) to 104 (72 group, 32 knockout). (2026 men’s World Cup – Wikipedia) The expansion may also mean an increase in the roster size for each team.

Read on for the key quotes from each article, plus a discussion of the allocations by confederation for recent Women’s World Cups as well as a potential allocation scenario for a generic 48-team Women’s World Cup. For this specific scenario, a table of the potential pots is also presented.

Additionally, an alternative tournament format is discussed, which would preserve a traditional 32-team format for the final tournament but introduce an intermediate inter-confederation group stage.
