USWNT: The USA Defeat The Republic of Ireland by Five Goals To Nil, Again

On a rainy Wednesday night in Portland, for the fifth time, the United States Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland by a score of 5 goals to none, with Alex Morgan, who only played 59 minutes, supplying a trio of goals, all in the first half, and her second-half substitute, Sydney Leroux adding two more. New Professional Women’s Soccer League: Wednesday Recap

On Wednesday, U.S. Soccer hosted a conference call (quote sheet, audio) with representatives from Canada Soccer, the Mexican Football Federation, where they officially, but not formally, announced a new professional women’s soccer league with eight teams in Boston, New Jersey, Western New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Kansas City, Seattle, and Portland (Oregon), which will launch in Spring 2013.The 2013 season will run from March/April to September/October. U.S. Soccer will fund, as in fully pay the salaries of up to 24 USWNT players, while Canada Soccer and the Mexican Football Federation will similarly fund up to 16 players each. U.S. Soccer will also absorb all front office related costs such as scheduling, promotion, and website.

In addition to the conference call, several teams in the new league expanded on the conference call through press releases, interviews, social media, etc. However, specific details, most notably regarding the league’s name and some of the team names, have apparently yet to be specified.  More information will come out in the next several weeks, as the purpose of the conference call was “to get this news out there,” according to Gulati.

Official Announcement on New Women’s Professional Soccer League Scheduled For Wednesday

Multiple professional soccer journalists have confirmed via Twitter (e.g. Grant Wahl, Jack Bell, Jeffrey Carlisle, Jeff Kassouf) that a conference call on a new women’s professional soccer league has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 21st. The call is apparently scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET (per @liviubird). Representatives from U.S. Soccer, Canada Soccer (CSA), and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) will all be on the call. The nature of Canada’s and Mexico’s federations involvement in this new league remains unclear.

New Details Emerge Regarding the Proposed New League

According to an article by Charles Boehm of SoccerWire.com, U.S. Soccer has recently set out an email to members of the United States Women’s National Team regarding a possible new professional women’s league that will begin play in 2013.  The email mentions eight potential teams, including four former WPS squads — Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash, and New Jersey’s Sky Blue FC — plus franchises in Washington, D.C.; Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and the Kansas City area. Regarding when the new proposed league will officially announced, no specific date has been given, although it is expected to be no later than the end of November or early December.

USWNT: Ireland Announces Its Squad For the USA’s Fan Tribute Tour

On Friday, the Football Association of Ireland released the eighteen player roster for its Women’s National Team which will face the United States Women’s National Team in two friendlies, on November 28th (10:00 p.m. ET, FOX Soccer) and December 1st 9:30 p.m. ET, TV to be determined). The Republic of Ireland is bringing seven or six players* born in 1990 or later, including a few who were members of Ireland’s 2010 Under-17 Women’s National Team, which knocked off Germany in the UEFA semifinals and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2010 Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad & Tobago. At least four of the eighteen players were born in the United States, all of whom who played collegiate soccer. At least three more players have also played NCAA soccer. USWNT: More on Sermanni, Plus Confirmation of the Final Three ‘Fan Tribute’ Matches

On Monday, U.S. Soccer confirmed that the United States Women’s National Team will play China in its final three matches of this year’s Fan Tribute Tour. Those matches will be Saturday, December 8th in Detroit at Ford Field, which is a roofed stadium, Wednesday, December 12th at Houston’s new BBVA Compass Stadium, and Saturday, December 15th, in Boca Raton at Florida Atlantic University.  The December 12th match is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central Time and, as already announced, will be broadcast live on FOX Soccer. TV information for the other two matches is not yet available.

USWNT: And the New Coach Is… Tom Sermanni

On Tuesday, October 30th, U.S. Soccer announced that current Australia Women’s National Team head coach Tom Sermanni would take over as the head coach of the United States WNT beginning on January 1, 2013 (USSoccer.com). Football Federation Australia issued a press release confirming that Sermanni would step down as head coach of the Matildas. This news was initially broken by The Womens Game. Terms of Sermanni’s contract, including length and salary, are not readily available. This announcement comes a full sixty days after Pia Sundhage announced on September 1st that she would step down as head coach of the USWNT. U.S. Soccer’s search committee, which was led by federation President Sunil Gulati, reviewed over thirty candidates and had interviews with at least six of them, including — besides Sermanni — Tony DiCicco, Paul Riley,  Randy Waldrum, Jim Gabarra, and Erica Walsh (twitter.com/JeffreyCarlisle).
