Youth USWNTs: Goalkeeper Identification Camp To Be Held Next Weekend
From December 7th to the 10th, U.S. Soccer will hold, apparently for the first time, an identification camp solely for goalkeepers as the federation begins the 2014 cycles for the Under-20 and Under-17 Women’s National Teams (USSoccer.com). Sixteen goalkeepers — ten for the U-20 WNT and six for the U-17 WNT — were called up and will be evaluated by USWNT Technical Director April Heinrichs plus a staff of four goalkeeper coaches: former USWNT goalkeeper coach Phil Wheddon, USWNT alumna goalkeeper Siri Mullinix (2000 Olympics), former U.S. U-20 MNT and MLS goalkeeper Clint Baumstark, and former WPS goalkeeper coach Nathan Kipp. This ID camp will be held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
The U.S. Soccer press release only includes a list of the sixteen goalkeepers in alphabetical order, without even a breakdown by age group. This post includes such a breakdown, along with birthdates and heights where available, plus the usual club/college information and hometown. Canada: December 2012 Camp Roster – Youth Movement Gets An Early Start
On Tuesday, Canada Soccer released head coach John Herdman’s roster of 27 players for the Canada Women’s National Team’s final camp of 2012* — and first of 2015 Women’s World Cup cycle. The roster contains twelve players born after 1990, including five from Canada’s most recent Under-20 WNT and four more from its Under-17 WNT, along with three other players born after 1990. Only twelve members of Canada’s Bronze Medal winning Olympic team have been called up, as the players on that team who played overseas or in college were given the camp off. The training camp will last nine days and run from Wednesday, December 12th to the 20th (a Thursday). Mexico: Roster For 2012 City of São Paulo Tournament Includes Sofia Huerta and Two Under-17 Players
Mexico’s head coach, Leonardo Cuellar, has called up 21 players for the upcoming City of São Paulo International Tournament (Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo), including a first-time invite for Under-20 standout forward Sofia Huerta of Santa Clara University, which caps off a whirlwind year for Huerta. Of the 21 players called up, besides Huerta, five other currently attend American universities: Renae Cuellar, Oklahoma; Alina Garciamendez, Stanford; Anisa Gujardo, Pepperdine; Arianna Romero, Nebraska; and Bianca Sierra, Auburn. From Mexico’s U-17 Women’s National Team, two players have been invited into the senior camp: captain Karla Nieto, and midfielder Paulina Solis, who is only 16 years-old (1996 birthday). USWNT: The USA Defeats Ireland, Again
On Saturday night, the United States Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland by a score of two goals to none, with Alex Morgan scoring her 28th goal of the year 44 seconds into the match and then adding her 19th assist of the year on a Megan Rapinoe goal. The match was a distinct contrast from the two sides’ previous meeting just three days earlier, where the USA scored five goals, including a hat trick by Morgan. Brazil: Jorge Barcellos Out, Márcio de Oliveira In; Plus Roster for the City of São Paulo International Tournament
Last Friday (November 23rd), the big news out of Brazil was that the CBF fired its men’s national team head coach, Mano Menezes, along with his entire staff. But, also included in the terse official announcement (cbf.com.br, in Portuguese) was that Márcio de Oliveira is the new head coach of the Women’s National Team, replacing Jorge Barcellos, who was brought in last November to replace Kleiton Lima. According to the Cruziero do Sul website (in Portuguese), Barcellos was not notified of his firing until late Friday afternoon. Oliveira is also the head coach for São José Esporte Club’s women’s team (www.SaoJoseEC.com.br, in Portuguese), which includes several veteran national team players on its current roster (in Portuguese): Daiane (Bagé), Danielli Pereira da Silva, Formiga, and Francielle.
On Thursday, the CBF website posted its WNT roster for the upcoming City of São Paulo International Tournament (Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo), which includes several new call-ups. The tournament, which also includes the national teams of Mexico, Denmark, and Portugal, begins on December 9th. It is played in a round-robin format with placement matches. USWNT: The USA Defeat The Republic of Ireland by Five Goals To Nil, Again
On a rainy Wednesday night in Portland, for the fifth time, the United States Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland by a score of 5 goals to none, with Alex Morgan, who only played 59 minutes, supplying a trio of goals, all in the first half, and her second-half substitute, Sydney Leroux adding two more.
