Olympics: About the African Teams, Cameroon and South Africa

The 2012 Olympic women’s soccer tournament will feature two new teams from Africa, Cameroon and South Africa, as this is the first time that Nigeria did not qualify for the Olympics, and the first time that Africa has two whole spots in the final field. Having never qualified for a Women’s World Cup, these two teams are also new to the world stage, and thus, unfamiliar to most fans of women’s soccer.

U-20 USWNT: April 2012 Friendlies Versus China’s U-20 WNT

In its first training camp since winning the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championhip, the United States Women’s National Team played two international friendlies versus China’s U-20 WNT. In the first match, on April 12th, the USA scored four second-half goals in a 4:1 victory. On April 15th, in the second match, the USA won 3:0.

Only match reports from US Soccer and TopDrawerSoccer.com are available in-depth sources for these two matches, so this post is mostly a filtered summary of those accounts.

U-20 USWNT: Possible Opponent Highlights, Asian U-20 WWC Qualifiers

For the upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup, four teams qualified from Asia: Japan (hosts) plus China, North Korea, and South Korea. As there are only four groups of four in the U-20 WWC, these four Asian teams will probably be in the same pot for the draw, so the USA will likely have one of these teams in its group.

USWNT: Late April Training Camp Roster Includes Christen Press

On Friday, US Soccer announced the roster of players who have been invited to a training camp which runs from April 18th to April 30th in Florida. Twenty-seven players were invited, including all 23 players who traveled to Portugal, for the Algarve Cup, and Japan, for the Women’s Kirin Challenge Cup. Additional players invited to the camp include goalkeeper Jill Loyden; midfielders Kristie Mewis (the only player still in college) and Keelin Winters; and forward Christen Press. USWNT To Play Sweden and Japan, in Sweden, in June

(Update, 18-April-2012: US Soccer has confirmed the USWNT’s involvement in the tournament. No word yet on TV coverage.)

On Wednesday, Sweden’s soccer federation (SvFF) announced on its website that in June  it will be hosting a mini friendly tournament between the women’s national teams of Sweden, the United States, and Japan.  The next day, Japan’s soccer federation (JFA), also posted a short news item on its website about the tournament. US Soccer has yet to publicly confirm the USWNT’s participation in this friendly tournament, which may be due to them trying to line-up a TV broadcaster before they make their official announcement. U-17 USWNT: CONCACAF Roster with Player Profiles

On Thursday, April 12th, US Soccer released the United States Under-17 Women’s National Team roster for the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship, which begins May 2nd in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The twenty player roster includes all eighteen players who went to La Manga plus midfielder Joanna “Jo” Boyles and forward Darian Jenkins.
