Brazil: Jorge Barcellos Out, Márcio de Oliveira In; Plus Roster for the City of São Paulo International Tournament

Last Friday (November 23rd), the big news out of Brazil was that the CBF fired its men’s national team head coach, Mano Menezes, along with his entire staff. But, also included in the terse official announcement (cbf.com.br, in Portuguese) was that Márcio de Oliveira is the new head coach of the Women’s National Team, replacing Jorge Barcellos, who was brought in last November to replace Kleiton Lima. According to the Cruziero do Sul website (in Portuguese), Barcellos was not notified of his firing until late Friday afternoon. Oliveira is also the head coach for São José Esporte Club’s women’s team (www.SaoJoseEC.com.br, in Portuguese), which includes several veteran national team players on its current roster (in Portuguese): Daiane (Bagé), Danielli Pereira da Silva, Formiga, and Francielle.

On Thursday, the CBF website posted its WNT roster for the upcoming City of São Paulo International Tournament (Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo), which includes several new call-ups. The tournament, which also includes the national teams of Mexico, Denmark, and Portugal, begins on December 9th. It is played in a round-robin format with placement matches. Olympics: Advancement Scenarios for the Final Match Day of Group Play

[Notes: (1) For those looking for a schedule of Tuesday’s matches, see the third section. (2) Hopefully the math for these scenarios is correct, but if you see an error or would like clarification, (as always) feel free to bring that up in a comment.]

Although five teams, the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, Japan, and Sweden, have secured spots into the quarterfinals of the women’s soccer tournament at this year’s London Olympics, those teams’ placement, as well as the placements for the other quarterfinal hopefuls remains in the balance and will be settled on the final group match day, Tuesday, July 31st. Olympics: Preview Notes – Brazil (Group E)

BRAZIL’S ONCE DAZZLING FORM HAS FIZZLED. A team that was a revelation in 2003, a difficult obstacle in 2004, a thorn in 2007, and a worthy opponent in 2008, became a sad villain in 2011. And, with disappointing results at the 2011 Women’s World Cup and the 2011 Pan-American Games, Brazil’s federation sacked head coach Kleiton Lima and brought back Jorge Barcellos, who led Brazil to a silver medal in 2008, and went on to coach the WPS’ St. Louis Athletica. This post is intended as an “FYI.” After the final tune-up matches on the 20th, a more proper write-up is planned.

Olympics: Brazil’s WNT Announces Its Roster (Plus Other Notes)

On Friday, head coach Jorge Barcellos announced Brazil’s roster for the women’s soccer tournament at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Great Britain (CBF.com.br, in Portuguese).  Only one player, defender Bruna Benites, was not on the roster for last year’s Women’s World Cup.  Neither Gabriela Maria Zanotti Demoner, who played collegiate soccer at Franklin Pierce University, nor Rafaelle Leone Carvalho Souza, who currently plays for the University of Missippi (Ole Miss) are on the eighteen player roster. Olympics: More Details on Brazil’s June Camp

On Friday, the CBF posted a short news item detailing the schedule for Brazil’s penultimate domestic training camp prior to the Olympics. As part of the camp, Brazil will play two scrimmages, one versus the Under-15 boys’ team of Fluminense (Wikipedia) and then one versus Brazil’s Under-20 Women’s National Team, who are preparing for the U-20 Women’s World Cup, which begins in late August. Also mentioned in the news item were the arrival dates for some of the European-based players, including Marta and Elaine, who both play for Tyresö in Sweden. Olympics: Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, and Others to Participate in a Friendly Tournament in Early July

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) released preliminary details of a friendly tournament that will take place from July 8th to the 17th in Savièse, Switzerland, between London-bound teams Brazil, Canada, and New Zealand, plus Russia and two other teams that have yet to be confirmed. The CBF news item uses the phrase “Copa Feminina da Suíça 2012” which translates to “Swiss Women’s Cup 2012,” but there is no word on whether Switerland’s WNT will participate in this six team tournament.
