And, The Name Is… “National Women’s Soccer League” (NWSL)

During halftime of Saturday night’s friendly between the United States Women’s National Team and China, the name of the new women’s professional league, along with its logo, was unveiled on NBC Sports Network. The name, “National Women’s Soccer League,” is not the one (“Women’s Professional Soccer Association”) mentioned earlier in the week by New Jersey Star-Ledger reporter, Frank Giase. Which is not to say that Giase’s information was wrong at the time, as the domain registrations for the new league’s primary web address, NWSLsoccer.com, was registered (Whois) a day after the article was published.

Mexico: Roster For 2012 City of São Paulo Tournament Includes Sofia Huerta and Two Under-17 Players

Mexico’s head coach, Leonardo Cuellar, has called up 21 players for the upcoming City of São Paulo International Tournament (Torneio Internacional Cidade de São Paulo), including a first-time invite for Under-20 standout forward Sofia Huerta of Santa Clara University, which caps off a whirlwind year for Huerta.  Of the 21 players called up, besides Huerta, five other currently attend American universities: Renae Cuellar, Oklahoma; Alina Garciamendez, Stanford; Anisa Gujardo, Pepperdine; Arianna Romero, Nebraska; and Bianca Sierra, Auburn. From Mexico’s U-17 Women’s National Team, two players have been invited into the senior camp: captain Karla Nieto, and midfielder Paulina Solis, who is only 16 years-old (1996 birthday). USWNT Neighbor Watch: Mexico’s Cuellar, ‘We are on the right track’

After returning from the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Panama, where Mexico qualified for the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Mexican Women’s National Team head coach Leonardo Cuellar, Mexico’s U-20 WNT head coach Roberto Medina, plus a handful of U-20 players, including senior national team goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago and U-20 team captain Nayeli Rangel, participated in a press conference. A video was posted (direct link, in MP4 format) on Femexfut.org.mx’s website and a text summary (in Spanish) was provided as well. CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship: Group A Preview

Assuming the U-20 USWNT make it out of Group B in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship (which is a very safe assumption), Group A will contain at least one knock-out stage opponent, and probably two. The two most likely knock-out stage opponents from Group A are Canada and Mexico. The other two teams in the group are Haiti and Jamaica.
