USWNT: Brazil, Since Last We Met…

The United States Women’s National Team will play Brazil in the USA’s second match of the Women’s Kirin Challenge Cup on April 3rd, in Japan. The last time these two teams met was just eight months ago, in the 2011 Women’s World Cup. Since that match, Brazil has changed its head coach, changed its captain, and changed its federation’s president. The one thing that has not changed is Brazil’s reliance on a three-back formation. U-17 USWNT: Known Line-Ups So Far This Cycle (through March 2012)

So, the Under-17 United States Women’s National Team roster for the team’s final tune-up camp prior to the CONCACAF Championship came out last week. As I was typing up the write-up, I noticed that some of the players had been listed under different field areas, than prior rosters. And, with everything else going on in soccer (e.g., U-20 CONCACAF Championship, Algarve Cup), I had not had time to thoroughly dig into the U-17 WNT roster.

This post is both a review of the past line-ups, as well as an exploration of the actual national team field positions for various players. Continue reading “U-17 USWNT: Known Line-Ups So Far This Cycle (through March 2012)”

USWNT Opponent: Japan’s 2012 Kirin Cup Roster Is Loaded With Defenders

Earlier today, Japan released its roster for the 2012 Women’s Kirin Challenge Cup, which begins April 1st, with Japan taking on the United States Women’s National Team. The 23-player roster is loaded with ten defenders, which is three more than were on Japan’s recent Algarve Cup roster.  From the Algarve Cup roster, head coach Naori Sasaki made five changes, although two are due to medical reasons.

The additional defenders may indicate that Sasaki is unhappy with his defense, which gave up four goals (3 during the run of play, 1 via a PK) versus Germany in the Algarve Cup final.

USWNT Rival Watch: Brazil’s Player Pool, 2012 Olympics (Detailed)

(Note: Some of the player’s positions have been corrected. The corrections are mostly due to a minor translation error on my part. Also, positions for other players have been updated, based on additional information.)

Last Wednesday, March 14th, the CBF released the names of 33 players who could be called up for Brazil’s Olympic team roster. This list is required to be submitted to the IOC, but I do not think that it is in anyway binding.

Since the CBF website does not maintain biographical pages for its players, I have listed those 33 players below, with details such as height, birthday, position information, plus relevant links to Wikipedia, FIFA.com competition summaries, etc., where available. Also, a quick summary of the list is provided as a table, which includes whether the player was rostered for recent matches, going back to the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

U-20 USWNT: CONCACAF Championship Playing Time Table

Here is the table of playing time for the U-20 USWNT at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship that concluded last Sunday in Panama. Only one player, Kassey Kallman played all possible minutes for the USA. Every player had at least 90 minutes of on-field action.

USWNT Rival Watch: Brazil’s Kirin Challenge Cup Roster

Last Thursday, Brazilian Women’s National Team head coach Jorge Barcellos announced the team’s preliminary roster for an upcoming friendly versus Canada (March 24th, at Gillette Stadium outside of Boston) and the Women’s Kirin Challenge Cup in April.  Twenty-one players were called, including several overseas-based players such as Marta, Christiane, and Fabiana, who did not participate in the squad’s prior two training camps this calendar year.

Update, 18-Mar-2012: Upon further research, I can fairly confidently confirm all the player names for the roster, thanks to the CBF releasing a player pool list the day after I posted this, originally.

USWNT Neighbor Watch: Mexico, February 2012 (Catch-Up)

In mid-February, the Mexican Women’s National Team traveled to China for the Yongchuan International Women’s Tournament where they played matches against three opponents: China, North Korea, and South Korea, and lost all three matches. U-17 USWNT: La Manga Recap with Playing Time Table

The USA’s Under-17 Women’s National Team completed their three matches in the Ten Nations U-19 Tournament at La Manga, Spain with a 2-0 defeat of the Netherlands’ U-19 WNT on Thursday. In the prior matches, the USA defeated France’s U-19 WNT 2-0 and tied England’s U-19 WNT, but lost on penalties, 4-3 (no extra time).

USWNT Rival Watch: Brazil WNT Training Camp Roster Includes 5 U-20 Players

Jorge Barcellos has called up 25 players for a camp from February 24th to March 8th. These are mostly, if not all Brazil-based players as regulars such as Cristiane and Fabiana remain in Europe. Marta is not listed, either. I’m not sure where she is: Either she’s training some place else or was given a rest pass.

Notably, the roster includes U-20 standout forward Thaisnha, who scored 7 or 6 goals in the recent CONMEBOL U-20 women’s championship in Brazil. (I’ve yet to find a final, official tally, hence the uncertainty.

Goalkeepers: Andreia Suntaque, Barbara Micheline, Daniele Neuhaus, Letícia Izidoro

Central Defenders (Zagueiras): Gislaine, Bagé, Renata Costa, Bruna

Sidebacks (Laterais): Maurine, Maycon, Danielle, Poliana

Defensive Midfielders (Volantes): Erika, Elaine

Midfielders (Meio-campo): Fran, Gabi, Mayara, Maria, Bia, Formiga

Forwards (Atacantes): Adriane, Thaisinha, Debinha, Chu, Grazi
