U-18 USWNT: 20 Players Called In For Friendly Tournament against China PR, Netherlands, and Norway U-18 WNTs

The Under-18 United States Women’s National Team will play the U-18 WNTs of China PR, the Netherlands, and Norway in a friendly round-robin tournament, from Saturday January 25th to the 31st, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.  All matches will be streamed (live, presumably).  For this camp, 20 players have been called up, all born in 2002.

This U-18 USWNT camp got underway on January 21st, the day after the conclusion of the U-20 USWNT’s January camp, which featured five 2002-born players, including, most notably, winger Trinity Rodman.  Unsurprisingly, none of those 2002-born players have been named to this roster. Neighbor Watch: Canada’s Roster For CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying 2020

And, the award for the most consistent team roster goes to… Canada.

All twenty players on Canada’s roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship were members of their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad, including every player who featured on-field for Canada in France.

Canada, who earned Bronze Medals in 2012 and 2016, will be hoping to qualify for its fourth-straight Summer Olympics.  Veteran forward Christine Sinclair is also hoping to make her fourth Olympics, while eyeing the career international goals record that is currently held by USWNT legend Abby Wambach. Opponent Watch: Panama’s Roster For CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying 2020 – Where Are The Goal-Scorers?

Panama, who was a penalty shoot-out away from qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, will be without five of their top six five goal-scorers over the past two calendar years for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, where they are grouped with the United States Women’s National Team in Group A.  Panama will also be without the head coach who guided them to the cusp of WWC qualification, Victor Suarez, who was sacked by Panama’s FA after last summer’s Pan-American Games, where Panama only managed to score a single goal in open play.

Opponent Watch: Costa Rica’s Roster for 2020 Olympic Qualifying

When the United States Women’s National Team finishes the group stage of this year’s CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament against Costa Rica, they will likely face a line-up quite similar to the one that they faced last November, in the two sides’ most recent match-up.  Of the 20 players on Costa Rica’s published roster for that friendly, head coach Amelia Valverde has retained 17 for the qualifying roster, including all 13 players who featured in that match (U.S. Soccer match report). USWNT: Roster For 2020 Olympic Qualifying Announced

For his first official tournament roster, recently installed United States Women’s National Team head coach Vlatko Andonovski elected not to make any significantly surprise selections, choosing only experienced players, including 18 players from last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup squad, for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

With no retirements after last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup and all core  WWC players available, except for the pregnant Alex Morgan, Andonovski chose just two players who were not in France last year:  NC Courage forward Lynn Williams and Washington Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan. Neighbor Watch: Mexico’s Roster for 2020 Olympic Qualifying Announced

After failing to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Mexico faces a steep uphill challenge as it tries to qualify for the women’s soccer tournament at this year’s Summer Olympic in Tokyo. With just two slots available at the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Championship, Mexico must first finish in the top half of Group B, which also includes two WWC squads, Canada and Jamaica, along with debutante minnow Saint Kitts & Nevis.  Should Mexico get out of the group, most likely in the runner-up spot, behind a solid Canada team, Mexico’s opponent in the all-or-nothing semifinal will be the reigning world champions, the United States Women’s National Team (absent a shock result in Group A). U-20 USWNT: First Camp Roster Under Laura Harvey Announced

Update (14-Jan-2020):  Stanford’s Katie Meyer is the fourth goalkeeper called-in for this camp.  U.S. Soccer’s original write-up for this roster only named three goalkeepers and noted that Harvey might add a fourth.  Meyer was a regular call-up during the 2016 U-16 and U-17 cycles (attending 6 and 7 camps, respectively), but has only had a few call-ups since the start of 2017.

Late Wednesday, U.S. Soccer released the roster for the Under-20 United States Women’s National Team’s last full camp before CONCACAF qualifying for this year’s FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.  This camp, which runs from January 9th to the 20th, will be the first camp helmed by recently installed head coach Laura Harvey.  Of the 25 players called in so far, at least 18 attended the Nike Friendlies camp in December, and just one of the players participated in December’s senior USWNT identification camp:  Brianna Pinto of North Carolina.

Stanford’s Sophia Smith, another attendee of the USWNT identification camp, is once again unavailable due to a senior USWNT call-up.  Curiously, the other two U-20 call-ups of December’s identification camp are absent:   Center backs Naomi Girma of Stanford and Maycee Bell of North Carolina. U-17 USWNT: 28 Players Called In For January 2020 Camp

On Friday, U.S. Soccer announced that the Under-17 United States Women’s National Team will be holding a camp in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, from January 5th to 15th, 2020.  Head coach Tracey Kevins has called in 28 players, 24 of whom attended the last U-17 USWNT camp, which was held in November 2019.

Of the four remaining players who did not attend the November 2019 camp, two are regular U-17 call-ups:  Defenders Baleigh Bruster and Andrea Kitahata.  The other two players are both attending their first U-17 USWNT camp:  Goalkeeper Azul Alvarez and quasi-professional midfielder Olivia Moultrie.

USWNT: Roster Announced For Last Camp Before Olympic Qualifying

On the last Friday of 2019,  U.S. Soccer released the roster for the United States Women’s National Team’s first camp of 2020, which will run from Sunday, January 5th to Wednesday, January 15th, and will be held in Florida.  This will be the last camp before CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying, which kicks off on January 28th.

USWNT: Another Addition for the 2019 Identification Camp

On Tuesday, U.S. Soccer announced that Penn State center back Kaleigh Riehl will be attending this year’s United States Women’s National Team identification camp, which officially began on Sunday, December 9th.

Riehl was a member of two FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cups, playing every minute of the USA’s six matches in 2016 while being an unused substitute during the 2014 tournament.

She recently wrapped up her NCAA career, logging a record 8847 minutes over her 101 matches, besting the record that had been held by current USWNT center back Becky Sauerbrunn (Virginia, 2003-2007; 8523 minutes, 91 matches).
