U-20 USWNT: Provisional Roster for 2020 CONCACAF Championship Released

On Monday, February 3rd, CONCACAF released the provisional rosters (PDF) for all teams participating in the final stages of the 2020 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship, giving us clues as to which players are still in the mix for new head coach Laura Harvey’s final 20-player roster, including #1 NWSL College Draft pick Sophia Smith.

The tournament, which will be hosted by the Dominican Republic and runs from February 22nd to March 8th (full schedule), will be used to decide the two – yes, just 2 – at-large qualification slots from CONCACAF for this year’s FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Panama.

2020 NWSL College Draft: Sophia Smith Goes #1, Mallory Pugh Traded to Sky Blue

As expected, Stanford sophomore forward Sophia Smith was selected by Portland Thorns FC as the overall #1 pick in this year’s NWSL College Draft.  What was unexpected was the series of trades that saw Sky Blue acquire USWNT forward Mallory Pugh from the Washington Spirit and the Chicago Red Stars acquire forward Rachel Hill from the Orlando Pride.  Oh, and Portland also ended up with the #2 overall pick, which they used to acquire Washington State forward Morgan Weaver. 2019 NCAA College Cup: Stanford Wins Third National Title

  • Stanford bests North Carolina on spot kicks (5:4, 6 rounds) after first scoreless draw in Women’s College Cup history
  • USWNT call-up Sophia Smith nets a hat trick versus UCLA in Stanford’s 4:1 semifinal win over the team from Westwood
  • North Carolina survives Washington State after 2:1 comeback victory

2019 NCAA D1 Championship: Second Round Highlights – Part 2

A quick round-up of available highlights for other Second Round matches in this year’s NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.

NCAA D1 Tournament: Notable 2019 First Round Results and Highlights

Over the weekend, 32 first round matches in the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.  The following is a quick run-through of results for notable teams as well as noteworthy upsets.  (Did I mention that there were 32 matches played over 3 days?)

Several USA youth internationals and players already with senior USWNT caps and/or call-ups had noteworthy offensive performances, including:

  • Sophia Smith (Stanford, eligible for 2020 U-20 WWC):  3 goals, 2 assists versus Prairie View A&M
  • 2018 U-20 USWNT’er Penelope Hocking (USC): 4 goals against Cal. State Fullerton
  • UNC’s Emily Fox (USWNT capped) scored once against Belmont and had two assists

Two members of Canada’s 2016 Olympic Bronze Medal winning squad scored goals in the weekend’s matches:

  • Senior Jessie Fleming, netted the opening goal for UCLA in their 4:1 victory over Lamar University
  • Junior Deanne Rose scored a consolation goal in Florida’s 2:4 loss to South Florida (USF)
