USWNT: In Search Of… The Next Head Coach

Before Saturday’s friendly against Costa Rica, U.S. Soccer announced that Pia Sundhage would be stepping down after the Australia friendlies and returning to Sweden to pursue other opportunities. Well, before Sundhage even left Rochester, the SvFF announced on their website that Sundhage had been hired as the new head coach of Sweden’s Women’s National Team, starting on December 1st.

With Sundhage’s upcoming departure, the search for a new head coach of the United States Women’s National Team begins.

The rest of this article reviews (1) what is known about the search process for this cycle, which is very little, so details from past searches are also mentioned, and (2) a non-exhaustive, unofficial best guess of who some of the candidates may be.

Olympics: Advancement Scenarios for the Final Match Day of Group Play

[Notes: (1) For those looking for a schedule of Tuesday’s matches, see the third section. (2) Hopefully the math for these scenarios is correct, but if you see an error or would like clarification, (as always) feel free to bring that up in a comment.]

Although five teams, the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, Japan, and Sweden, have secured spots into the quarterfinals of the women’s soccer tournament at this year’s London Olympics, those teams’ placement, as well as the placements for the other quarterfinal hopefuls remains in the balance and will be settled on the final group match day, Tuesday, July 31st. Olympics: Television Schedule for July 28th, with “Live Extra” Links

On Saturday, July 28th, all twelve teams in women’s soccer tournament at this year’s London Olympics will play their second group matches. The United States Women’s National Team, fresh off their comeback win over France will take on Colombia at noon Eastern time. This match will be shown live on NBC Sports Network and NBC’s Specialty Soccer Channel, as well as via a live stream on NBCOlympics.com. Olympics: Preview Notes – Sweden (Group F)

DON’T COUNT THEM OUT — Down a player due to a dubious red card in the consolation match at last year’s Women’s World Cup, Sweden found a way to scoring a go-ahead goal and hold onto the lead to claim third place. This year, Sweden finds itself without several key players due to injuries. But, among the healthy is their star forward, Lotta Schelin. And, that is cause of concern for any defense. This post is intended as an “FYI.” After the final tune-up matches on the 20th, a more proper write-up is planned.

Matches not involving two senior women’s national teams (e.g., scrimmages against club teams) are beyond the scope of this post. Olympics: Sweden’s Semi-Official Roster

On Wednesday, Sweden released its roster for the women’s soccer tournament for this year’s Summer Olympics in Great Britain (SvFF).  Four players were not on the 2011 Women’s World Cup roster: Defenders Emma Berglund and Malin Levenstad, who have just 16 caps total between them; midfielder Johanna Almgren, a 2008 Olympics veteran; and forward Kosovare Asllani.  A few key veterans are not available due to injuries.  For more on Sweden’s injury woes, see the earlier post about their Volvo Winners Cup roster.
