U.S. Soccer announced on Wednesday that Universal Sports Network will televise both of the United States Women’s National Team matches in the Volvo Winners Cup. And, more importantly, as most American cable subscribers do not get that channel, both matches will streamed live and for free on UniversalSports.com. Opponent Watch: Sweden’s Roster For Friendlies Versus the USA and Japan

On Tuesday, Sweden released its 22-player roster for its two friendly matches versus the United States and Japan, as part of the Volvo Winners Cup, which it will host in mid-June. There were no surprise inclusions, but Sweden’s injury woes since the 2011 Women’s World Cup has forced several changes to the team’s starting line-up, especially on its back line.

Olympics: Notes on the Latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings

On June 1st, the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings were released. While there were no major shake-ups, the most notable rankings movement was by Brazil, whose series of losses to Canada, the USA, and Japan, caused them to drop 33 points and fall from fourth place to fifth place, behind Sweden. Meanwhile, the United States remains in the number one spot and was able to extend its points lead over Germany and the other top teams. A Round-Up of Other Notable International Matches (Late May 2012)

Besideds the USA’s 4:1 win over China, three other notable matches occurred in the past week: Canada defeated China 1:0 at home, Germany defeated Romania 5:0 in a Women’s Euro qualifier, and Sweden beat Scotland 4:1 in an away friendly. Olympics: Women’s Soccer Tournament Groups, With Schedule

The draw for the soccer tournaments at the 2012 London Olympics was held earlier today. The groups are as follows:

Group E: Great Britain (E1), New Zealand (E2), Cameroon (E3), Brazil (E4)
Group F: Japan (F1), Canada (F2), Sweden (F3), South Africa (F4)
Group G: USA (G1), France (G2), Colombia (G3), North Korea (G4)

For the USA, this means that they will play France first, then Colombia, and finally North Korea.

USWNT To Play Sweden and Japan, in Sweden, in June

(Update, 18-April-2012: US Soccer has confirmed the USWNT’s involvement in the tournament. No word yet on TV coverage.)

On Wednesday, Sweden’s soccer federation (SvFF) announced on its website that in June  it will be hosting a mini friendly tournament between the women’s national teams of Sweden, the United States, and Japan.  The next day, Japan’s soccer federation (JFA), also posted a short news item on its website about the tournament. US Soccer has yet to publicly confirm the USWNT’s participation in this friendly tournament, which may be due to them trying to line-up a TV broadcaster before they make their official announcement. USWNT Neighbor + Rival Watch: Canada’s Friendlies Versus Brazil and Sweden

The London-bound Canadian Women’s National Team played two friendlies recently, both against fellow Olympics-bound teams: a 2:1 victory against a far from full strength Brazil on March 24th, outside of Boston; and a 1:3 loss versus Sweden in Malmö, on March 31st. Sweden’s victory this past Saturday ended a two-match losing streak (0:4 losses to Germany and the USA during the Algarve Cup). USWNT: 2012 Algarve Cup Recap (Catch-Up)

At the 2012 Algarve Cup, the USWNT won its first two matches, then lost to Japan 0:1, in the final group match. In its placement match, the USA defeated Sweden 4:0, with Alex Morgan getting her first international hat trick.

USWNT Rival Watch: Sweden at the 2012 Algarve Cup (Catch-Up)

In the 2012 Algarve Cup, Sweden suffered two straight 0:4 losses, first to Germany, and then to the USA. In its first two matches, Sweden defeated China 1:0 and Iceland 4:1.

Notables: (1) The back-to-back 0:4 losses; (2) Dennerby’s continued experimentation with the 4-2-3-1 formation; (3) Lotta Schelin earned her 100th cap in the China match; and (4) 21 year-old midfielder Antonia Göransson has 4 goals this year, to lead the team.
