Two of the USWNT’s group stage opponents in the upcoming Algarve Cup have announced their rosters: Japan and Norway. Denmark is the USA’s other opponent in their group.
USA’s matches are Denmark (29-Feb), Norway (2-Mar), and Japan (5-Mar). Continue reading “Japan and Norway Algarve Cup Squads”
Recent USWNT camp attendee Ingrid Wells scored her first goal for Damallsvenskan side K/Göteborg FC on Saturday in a friendly tournament match versus Östers IF of Sweden’s second highest league (“Division 1”). Göteborg won 4-0, with Wells contributing on all four goals. Continue reading “Ingrid Wells Gets First Goal for K/Göteborg FC”
At this time, these are the regular kinds of tweets that I plan to post on Twitter.
#ThisDayInHistory: A historical factoid related to women’s soccer, that will usually be about either the USWNT, its youth teams, women’s professional soccer in the USA, or NCAA Women’s Soccer. At this time, these tweets will be sent out at around 8:00 am Eastern (USA) time, Monday through Friday and at around noon eastern on the weekend. USWNT coach Pia Sundhage has named 23 players who will travel to Portugal for a training camp prior to the Algarve Cup. 21 players will be named for the Cup roster. Notable additions to the usual regulars are Whitney Engen and Meghan Klingenberg, Both earned their first two (and only) caps last year. (Engen at the 2011 Algarve Cup, Klingenberg at China’s Four Nations Tournament).
GOALKEEPERS (3): Nicole Barnhart, Ashlyn Harris, Hope Solo
DEFENDERS (9): Rachel Buehler, Stephanie Cox, Whitney Engen, Meghan Klingenberg, Amy LePeilbet, Heather Mitts, Kelley O’Hara, Christie Rampone, Becky Sauerbrunn
MIDFIELDERS (7): Shannon Boxx, Tobin Heath, Lori Lindsey, Carli Lloyd, Heather O’Reilly, Megan Rapinoe, Amy Rodriguez
FORWARDS (4): Lauren Cheney, Sydney Leroux, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach
Barring injuries, I expect Harris and Klingenberg to be the two players who will be left out of the final Cup roster.

Via @jenna_awk, it appears that 2010 MAC Hermann Trophy winner and Stanford alum, Christen Press (Wikipedia) will be playing for Göteborg FC (Wikipedia) in Sweden.
The draw for CONCACAF’s Women’s Under-17 Championship will be held this Sunday in Miami, Florida.
Host Guatemala has been placed in Group A. Mexico has been placed in Group B, while the other two North American teams, USA and Canada have been placed in the same pot. This avoids the possibility of USA and Canada being in the same group. Continue reading “CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship Draw to be Held Sunday”
Today, I changed my Twitter handle from @wsoccer_news to @WSoccerExpress.
I also changed my Tumblr subdomain from wsoccer-news to wsoccerexpress. But, since I also have a full domain name, this change is mostly a behind-the-scenes change.
These are “in-place” modifications, which means that you do not need to do anything other than take a mental note of the change. If you were following me before, then you’re still following me. And, if you have me in a list, I am still in that list.
The main reason for the change are (1) to clear up any confusion between me and @wSoccerNews (www.wSoccerNews.com); and (2) to use PR speak, to have a more consistent “brand identity” across all platforms.
Regarding confusion with other Twitter accounts, there are two soccer stores with handles @SoccerExpress and @Soccer_Xpress, but I do not think that confusion with those accounts will be that much of an issue as those are general soccer retailers and I am focused on just women’s soccer news.
This was something I had been mulling over for a couple days, but compared to the name change, there were several additional issues to consider, so I wanted to take my time. Plus, I felt that changing the account’s name and handle at the same time might be more confusing.
